Aug 6 Mesquite TX Auction Roll Call

Yea on their website it states the next Auction in October will be held at Big Town exhibition hall, located around 7 miles from the current auction site.

I think Big Town is where Super Auctions first started. I'm sure the new location is cheaper to rent, so you can't blame AAA for trying to save some money by conducting the auction at a different location.

Did anyone see what the cabaret went for.

325 I think. It had Jr in it which they never mentioned while auctioning it.

They also had some cool arcade carpet (About 40 yards) that was new that went for 345.

The Turbo Sub board is rare but none of them had the boards. I talked to someone who said they saw several Turbo Subs back in the day and it wasn't a bad game. I had never heard of it till I came here. I though about the Turbo Subs Cockpit but was out of room in my truck and didn't want to make two trips.

Just went to their website and it has the next auction but not the others. They said they had a schedule for the next year and a half. I also noticed the back side of me in one of the pics. I reconized my shirt.

I think cost is a factor but also the last few years of auctions conflicts with the mesquite rodeo. the rodeo needs that parking for their season ticket holders and that makes it real hard to get trucks and equipment in and out of there. Big town is not as nice, but it is just an auction. Dosen't need to be nice. There never is a problem loading out there as the whole front side of the building is one long side walk that trucks can back up to all along the front. The building is probably better for an auction as there are very few doors for stuff to walk out of so they can watch the items better and the snack bar was always better with burgers and stuff that they would make fresh. And they can use the sign out by the street that is easy for people to see from the highway. For the auction to continue,
this is probably a good move.

+1

Bigger parking lot, still easy to access, more room, and probably more cost effective.

Add in that big sign out front and you'll get more traffic into the auction.

I am currently uploading the pix from the auction. I haven't done any editing, so there are some blurry ones and probably some dups.

Overall not a bad auction. I would have bid on a few more things, but I am out of room and only bid on jamma cabs I can multicade easily.

Edit: Thanks to Photobucket the pictures have been randomized :(. It's too much of a hassle to sort them out so that's the way they are going to stay.

Kudos to Raymond (Channelmanic):

Was great running into some familiar faces and meeting some new ones too! I ended up with one of the Jurassic Park pins, the Rescue 911 pin (that I mostly bought out of spite), and the House of the Dead 2. There were some good deals there, I felt like most of what I saw there would fall into the project class. I was really dissappointed with the lack of pins and classics this time.

Overall I think this auction was a much cleaner operation than the past SuperAuctions where there were so many shenanigans I witnessed that auctioneers could EASILY lose their license. Of course I still watched the big sellers calling shots with auctioneers and directing them. I had a talk with Shawn about this afterwards and pointed out that as buyers we really do notice all this going on and some of the things in the past had left a really bad taste in my mouth as a buyer and suggested the lines between seller and auctioneer needed to be a bit clearer. In a nutshell he did basically say they are completely at the mercy of a couple big sellers as the auction would not be viable without them.

I overheard one guy talking to what I guess was his employee, instructing him to bid up to $ 500 per Space Invaders / Qix game. and the Spy Hunter display was upside down.

I bid to $400 on each of the SI/Qix games before dropping out. They were beautiful cabinets! I just wasn't sure how good the resale on them would be to the non-collector types.

That fire truck went for crazy high money. I don't think either bidder saw the big crack across the front of the monitor down at the bottom.

Ohh...that was sad. I didn't see the crack. Would have loved to have seen that beauty fire up!

Never been there, but not having the hotel right there is a big downside to me. That's a huge convienence for as long as that day is.

I really don't have a problem with the sellers bidding on their own stuff, you can't expect them to give their stuff away. I use to buy cars at salvage auctions where they would have price reserves on some of the cars and nothing is worse than being the high bidder and later finding out you did not meet the reserve.
I only bid up to the amount I feel comfortable paying and end it there.

I see the shill bidding going on with a few of the resellers, and it does turn me off as a buyer. So when I'm bidding on a game and I see the shilling starting to happen, I immediately stop bidding and walk away shaking my head laughing as I look at the reseller. I can understand the need in having the venders bring games to the auction, or there wouldn't be an auction, but I wouldn't have a problem if some of the games had a reserve starting price, and if no one wanted to start off bidding that amount then the game could be passed.

My issues are less about the sellers bidding on their own stuff vs. the other things that are going on. It is legal and part of the terms are you can bid on your own stuff. What does bother me is how the auctioneers will work to get top dollar on items I see being sold by the big few sellers vs. the other items from the small sellers. I have also had them STOP the auction when I was about to win an item to go get the seller from outside to come bid against me! (Not sure about the legality on that one). At this auction I watched the Seller signaling the auctioneer where to start the bidding at on his items.

I also witnessed an item at an auction that was SOLD for a certain amount...hammer down, called Sold and the amount and then the amount was written on the tag. Seller was off somewhere else and was pissed when he found out the item sold for less than he wanted so they just changed the amount on it to be $500 more and tried to tell the buyer he was mistaken. They ended up having to give the buyer some free hotel rooms at subsequent auctions to make up for it. This was VERY illegal.

At that same auction I also witnessed during the middle of bidding the auctioneer and one of the big sellers negotiating on sharing truck space concerning the item that was up for bid! That whole exchange was quite slimy!

I share your feelings of it being a turnoff. There is one seller in particular that when I see him bidding, I will stop bidding in my tracks. On the House of the Dead 2 I bought I did find out afterwards the only person bidding against me was the seller. He still let it go for what I consider a good deal for me (hopefully, depending on how hard it is for me to repair the gun issues).

I would prefer a reserve price. I would not want to bring my own items there and lose a ton of money on them, so I can understand the shilling. I have also seen them say a certain item does have a reserve price on it when the bidding isn't starting high enough...which I believe is code for "I don't see the seller here to bid on it". Their terms specifically state they do NOT have reserve prices. Of course for their big sellers, the terms seem to be VERY fluid, which I also commented to Shawn about last night.

Who is this guy in the light grey shirt? I've seen him forever, but can't remember his name.

DUDE! He's a famous TV star! Featured just this week on American Pickers!! His name is Craig Hassell and he organizes the Texas Pinball Festival and has helped AAA get their business off the ground after the SA implosion.

Of course, don't forget Mullet-Man (David) in that pic too. He's quite the legend himself. I enjoyed listening to all my SuperAuction greatist hits this weekend...including such favorites as "it's polly jist a fuse..." , "the monitor just needs adjustin'..." , "looked great when new..." and "we just sold one of these a while back for <insert 100x-300x current bid amount>"

I love to heckle some of the more ridiculous statements he makes. My two favorites this weekend were when looking at a real shitter of a machine that appeared to have more years of dust on it than years of operation and when it wouldn't come on he kept claiming his usual "it worked before..." to which I asked, "when was that? 1986?" The best was when we were at a pair of Rock-N-Bowl redemption games and the current bid was $25 for one and not climbing and he kept talking about how they sold them for $3000 at just another auction recently....I then laughed at him and asked "yeah, but what about the other one we just sold two aisles ago for TEN DOLLARS?" He didn't really have much of a response for me that time ;)

Oh, I never forget David. He's a pretty good guy to hang out with and shoot the breeze. Plus he proves that mullets will never go out of style......
