How is the best way to do this? my US championship v'ball game has no sound coming out of it. Nothing going on when I touch the amp on pin one so I'm pretty sure that it is dead.
I have replacements bought and I am looking at the board which is being used as the heat sink.
Should I just cut the pins leaving the old dead amp in place and mount the new one with a heat sink attached perpendicular to the board? Or should I attempt to pull the whole damn amp off with just my soldering iron and perhaps a heat gun.
I'm not a big fan of the heat gun method just so you know.
I just don't think I have the "fire" power (pun intended) to pull this amp ground plate off the board without destroying it.

Probably better to use a desoldering pump if you can get your hands on one quickly.

Otherwise, its pretty safe to snip each leg. Then use a pair of tweezers to get the rest out after heating up the pad with an iron.

I prefer to use a pump because it clears out the solder from the plate thru hole making it easier to replace the part.

Yea if you have no pump then cut the legs. Heat each leg with the soldering iron and pull them out with tweezers. Then use desolder wick to clean out the holes.

I have a pump for the legs. I've always been a big fan of removing the old completely but in this case I think that doing so would be problematic. I think just cutting and removing the legs for the new one is my best option.

I disagree. If you have the pump, do it right.

Soldering to left over pin pieces is not the best way to go. You can heat the connection, and one little jiggle and and you have a cold pin to board solder joint, and it won't work.

Do it once.
Do it right.
