Auction Resell Banter

If someone keeps advertising a lump of shit as a pile of gold, eventually some sucker will pull the trigger.

My favorite is when someone buys a game then resells it for a profit using the same pictures as the original guy. I won't knock people for trying to make money but have some decency. haha!

Lol! I have seen that too, you would think they would be smart enough to know most buyers of these have been scrolling through countless craigslist ads in hopes of maybe finding a game or a great deal on something, I guess it does help the fact that all kinds of red flags fly when you have that "ah ha" moment that you have seen the pictures somwhere before, then you know who you are truly dealing with.:)

Ahhh the old "theres a buyer for everything" philosophy....

True there is and I don't begrudge the seller, heck I listed my car on craigslist a few months ago with a crazy high price because I thought it would never be accepted, and it would appease my wife and of course she not being very craigslist savvy would think "Yeah we could get that for it" nodding at me with a big aggreeing smile....lol....:D
Then it was accepted.......:(

There are several resellers in the central iowa area. A few are fair, decent and nice to work with. A few are just profiteers as well. The bottom line IMO is. If the game is worth the price to you then roll with it. If not do not buy it. If they are way overpriced then it will not sell.

Are you the pella person who has been on CL selling as of late? The auctions here in central iowa leave much to be desired. I rarely go anymore. They moved them 35 miles out of Des Moines which makes the drive take time and is rarely ever worth it. Plus I do not like having bid wars with the seller which happens 90% of the time at the local auctions.

There are my pennies.....

This sounds an application letter to attend the next KLOV Price Police Academy.....:D

There are a bunch of people who do this not only with auctions but on craigslist as well, heck they don't even wait for the ad they bought them from to run out before they relist them.
Greed is greed plain and simple, some people have more than others and there is no changing them.

Why is trying to make money greed. Some people do actually have to make a living in this industry just like every other industry. Mouths to feed. If I pick something up cheap damm right I'm going to try to maximize my profits. I have three kids and I never no when my main income stream could run out in this economy. Multiple sources of income are necessary. people crack me up

Your putting more into what I stated, I never begrudged anyone from making money, by your description am I greedy because I have a job?
I have three kids, have a fulltime job, wife doesn't work, only one source of income mine, but I would call myself greedy if I bought a game off of craigslist for say $75 and then the same day turned around and listed it for $400 without doing anything to it and even used the original sellers pics because I am too lazy and cheap to take my own.
So yeah by my definition I call that greedy, to each his own.

you wont like seeing me at the auction then. as ill buy a trailer load, and you will see it all for sale the next week. And i attend auctions in your state as well, so there is a chance you might see me at one if you go. There is a easy way to stop me. Bid on the games. If it sells cheap enough for me to resell it, i will buy it.

I'm a novice collector that tries to find good deals, use my machines, and sell again to buy something else. I in no way try to make large profits off these machines or try ripping people off when I do resell.

I went to a local auction, and hours after the auction I see the items on Craigslist for 3-4 times the price they paid at the auction.

I feel for the casual collector, this is unfair and something needs to be said to these guys.

How do you convince people that have things incredibly overpriced that the games are not worth what they were brand new?

Gruber, to answer you question no, I am not the person from Pella selling the games (WAY OVERPRICED by the way(I will have the Steel Gunner up in a day or so)).

I do have a couple games that I personally play with, but when an old World Class Bowling game goes for $100 at the auction and is on Craigslist that day for $600 is a little goofy.

I do agree, there are a few fair priced buyers that do go to the auctions, fix the games up a little, fine tune, get their use out of them and resell. I believe that IS part of the collector base. BUT, there when, lets say 6-8 items were purchased from the same person and all on craigslist the next day for AT LEAST twice as much as they purchased, I find it hard for start-up collectors to want to buy games.

I don't mind the idea of them trying to make money but it often results in wasting a lot of people's time on my local Craigslist. Sellers are often relisting every few days without details in the title so I'm opening the ads up to find it is the same one or he just lowered the price a few bucks. Sometimes the price in the title is listed super low then the real asking price is in the details. Trying to sell and profit is one thing but to do so in a way that wastes other's time is not good business.

Another thing I've noticed is a good or descent deal will pop up on Craigslist. A day or two later the same item may show up, obviously for sale by someone else, and the price has doubled or tripled.

Do the people who resell these games do it full time? Seems like there would be easier ways to make a buck. It would be interesting to see the profit these resellers have at the end of each year.

I'm sure there are. But if you are in the hobby and are going anyway and have the truck and space, why not try to offset the costs of the hobby/make a profit by selling some as well? I really don't see why this is such a big deal. It makes games available to those of us who would not attend an auction, you don't have to buy it if you don't like the price and (wait for it) you can always go to the auction yourself to scoop up all those great deals. Where is the problem here?

Your right, it's not a big deal, just something to talk about on a classic arcade collecting discussion forum, I'm sure the real estate guys say the same thing about guy's who buy houses for a very low price and then re-sell/re-list them the next day without doing any work on them for hefty profits on their discussion forums.......:p

Touche !

Here is one prime example of something I am talking about. I am assuming, this was picked up for free in this thread:

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=163751&highlight=iowa+tokyo

And now trying to sell it for $1500 in this thread:

I understand many people getting there money's worth out of a days' auction. But this just seems like a slap in the face. I know it will probably never sell for that, but it seems rude.
