I just picked up a nice dedicated Ataxx (Thanks Nick), but need some info.
From what I can ascertain, there are multiple versions of the boards (trackball, joystick, w/sound pot, without soundpot). I believe in order to convert a trackball board to a joystick board, 4 pals are changed out. I have two working boards that do not respond to trackball input and am at a loss. Wiring checks out, trackballs are tested working. What I need is someone with a working trackball version to snap a pic of their board (PLEASE), or list the markings on the 4 pals so I can determine if the boards I have are both the joystick versions.

It looks like the joystick pals are here:http://www.videogameparts.com/searc...0A390EC4B81D47BCB.qscstrfrnt06?keywords=ataxx

Are the trackball pals marked the same?

I have been on this journey for about 5 years. I have three boardsets. I snapped these 5 years ago of a working dedicated board at CAX:

Thanks!
That confirmed it. The PALs on my two boards and the part numbers on the NOS trackball to joystick set on Mylstars are the same. They are different than those on the pics you took at CAX.
So......
Where do I get the PALs????

Mine look exactly like the photos that Tom Posted. Same numbers in the same order on all the chips posted.

except:

U75 = 02-24-01
U76 = 02-25-01
U77 = 02-26-01
U78 = 02-27-01

Ah I see what you are saying. that means we both have the trackball to joystick pals on our boards.

Exactly.
U75-78 are different on the trackball board.
Anyone have the files or a set of PALs?

I just went and double checked all my boards. Sadly I have to report that one of them has the PAL's shown above and two have the other set.

However, a friend loaned me a boardset with some extra goodies in the bag that I just saw today (after all these years)...

There is an extra chip, U38, with a slightly different part number. The chip on all three "not working with the trackball" boards is labeled : E-302-31005-05 The extra chip in the bag of goodness reads: E-302-31005-02

Pretty damn amusing if I have been sitting on this for 5 years...

Its a 27c010. I can read this in my burner and make the chip if this is the answer. Now I just need to haul the Ataxx from storage, find a monitor and a couple of trackballs to replace the two I snagged for other projects...sigh

I never figured out how to play that damn game, cool audio though

Bump to the top!

Anyone ever get the de-conversion figured out? I have a joystick board that I need converted to a trackball version. Is it just the 4 PAL chips or is it more? Can I get the PAL data to get burned from someone?

Mine is working with track balls. I have zero clue at the moment how I did it. I am in the process of sourcing a decent monitor for it so I can finally wrap this up after 10 or so years. :D
