Does anybody know how Atari's serial numbering system worked ?

It's well known they used a system so that "no-one" could tell/guess how many of the cabs were produced. I'm just interested in how that system worked and maybe be able to know something more about the Atari serial numbers on my cabs.

I can only speak for one game as usual.

720 started with UR01000 and ended at UR03265.

I've heard the same thing, that the numbers were issued out of sequence, or with gaps, or without even starting numbers to hide the total production. Figuring it out for 720 became part of the goal of the registry. I'm up to over 50 cabs now starting at UR01005 and ending at UR03262, with a pretty good spread of #s in between. That coupled with the production #s at http://www.ionpool.net/ (2265 units) is the basis.

Not sure if the same logic could be applied to other games, but checking your serial numbers against maybe a few others', then comparing to the production numbers is a start.

There's information out there on alot of games from Atari. In fear of losing the info I grabbed some of it and posted it here. People argued the validity of it.

I would say the one person I'd listen to would be Scott Evans. I would assume even if he does step in he'd get hit by the knowitall naysayers that would try to debunk him anyway. I'd personally like to know also.
