Hey guys

A question for serious Vector monitor people :)

Has anyone tried converting a 60VAC raster power brick into a 50VAC Vector brick?

I want to use it in my test bench, using Amplifone setup, so it seems the 60V would be fed in both the Deflection and the HV board after the bridge rectifier converts it to DC

The question is will the 2 x PCBs be capable of dealing with the extra 10Volts AC?

When you are talking about 60VAC and 50AVC Are you talking about the voltages going in or the frequency of the voltage going in? If your talking about the voltage A simple step up transformer should work but if your talking about the 50 and 60 hertz. That might cause to an issue.
 
I agree with Dick... or get an iso transformer that is tapped for 100V and us it to step down the 60v to 50v. I wouldn't suggest running the display at 20% overvoltage... They are fragile enough as it is :D

The variac would work, but because it's centre tapped I would need 2.

A step down on the primary would also change the 6.1V, the 10.6V, and the 36V, so that would not work :(

The voltage is what I need to change, not freq.

Replacing the brick sounds good. I would like to, but they are hard to come by. If anyone has a spare please let me know

Yes, I do agree about the sensitivity of the monitors

I was going to try LARGE resistors on the 2 x 30V lines.

I have a mate in another town with the same brick, looking for the same solution, so I will look at adding resistors or just adding a new 50V transformer (a 2nd transformer)
 
How about using a 120 volt to 100 volt transformer. some of the isolation transformers have extra tap Or you can find a Nintendo transformer 120v to 100 v

If you put 50 Volts in the 100 Volt side you should get 60 Volts on the other side.

Need to make sure it can handle a peak current of 5 Amps

I could just use 2 x common stepdown transformers, from 240v down to 100V

I could put the primaries in series and the secondaries in parrallel.

So I get double the capacity and half the voltage

I will have a look around
 
4 pound transformer should be about 200 watts but that would only give you about 3 amps.
8 pound transformer should be about 500 watts should give you about 8 amp At 60 volts.
 
I rigged up 2 x 24V transformers' secondary windings in series and linked them to the correct points.

Then fed it into the existing harness. Now I get 50VAC centre tapped and the 60VAC from the brick just goes nowhere

The rating of the new transformer is 2.5 amps, that's the only issue

I bought a dozen transformers for $100 all up, so if I have to add 2 more I am fine with that.

2.5A should be enough, but I will stick an ammeter on the 50Vac supply to see what it peaks at when the death star explodes
 
The good news is . . . .

Yes it worked, the typical current is 1.7 Amps on the 2 x 25V wires.

In summary, the voltage remained above 25V under load
The current peaked at 2.5A for less than 1 second during the very last part of the death star explosion then returned to 1.7Amps.

I am happy with the results
