Hello, I have an original Atari 3" trackball in my crystal castles machine and one of the small encoder PCBs is missing. Can I use a different brand encoder board in it if I replace both of them? I see the the newer encoder boards have an IC chip and the original atari boards do not.
And that brings me to the second question, can I just replace the entire trackball assembly with a new one and will the 6 pin plug pinout be the same as the original?
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Lance

A Wico encoder board will not fit an Atari trackball. They are physically different sizes. A Happ encoder board will work. Happ bought the rights to copy Atari's design....so everything is compatible. A new Happ encoder board with the IC chip will work. And yes, you can replace the entire track ball assembly. As far as pinouts of the connector go....They're usually the same, but check the wire colors to be sure.

IIRC I put a Wico encoder in an Atari TB, but I had to epoxy it in place because it was a different size. Electrically I believe they are compatible.

I just tried to use a happ trackball in my Millipede and it wouldn't work. I had to use the Atari boards. The happ boards use a 74hc14 ic which is a trigger inverter. I think that makes it active low?

Bringing back an old thread...anyone know for sure if I can use a Happ in place of an Atari track ball?

ALSO - does anyone happen to know the name of the crazy connector they use on the original harness? Looks like a molex but has a divider wall.

All three Atari,Wico,Happ, are interchangable. I plugged a wico and a happ 3 inch into my millipede and they all worked.
