Hey guys, just doing a daily post. I was doing some searching around for games; (my typical way to spend a weekend :) ) and I came across two similar but different eBay listings. One for a re-done Atari star wars stand-up with all original parts, but artwork and levelers and misc. stuff all fixed up; and another that was a prototype cockpit. they are asking for around 3700.00 for the stand-up, and around 5,500 for the cockpit. the stand-up is also offering free shipping, and a free tech service that is available around the clock in case there is something that goes wrong that needs fixing and I may lack the capacity to fix. This goes without saying though because I feel I have learned a lot and am getting close to a point to where I don't even need around the clock service as I would rather figure it out myself and fix it myself, but it does seem like a nice luxury to have. Like I said, it seems like a good deal, especially if you use the bill me later function and make payments on it (they are offering 18 months interest free). The cockpit on the other hand seems WAY overpriced even for a rare, hard to find prototype cockpit. They are not even offering free shipping or any kind of tech service if something goes wrong. My problem is while it is totally nice, it is expensive and not cost efficient and also goes against what I have learned arcade collecting is truly about. My experience is that as a collector, I typically buy games at a fair to low price range, typically with a few things that are problematic, and learn to fix them up. The process is rewarding and it is a good way build stories to share with other collectors. The problem I have encountered though is sometimes it can be hard to find parts or artwork or even the game for that matter as some are rare;which makes it seem sometimes like buying a game that is already "finished" seem more and more rational. I guess this is where I get confused. One route is the quick and easy, one is the hard and long but worthwhile. These games "seem" rare because I don't find many listings, and when I do, the prices are always jacked up. games that are valued around 1000-1800 are sold for 3500 or higher, etc. I want to buy these games at lower prices and take risks fixing them, but also can be very time consuming and my arcade will take a lot longer to get together. right now I only have 3 games. I know patience is part of this, but for my "list" it would certainly be nice to have one of the "top" games crossed off. What do you guys think? I am interested and look forward to your input. Thanks for your time and help, - Phil

An nice working upright is worth 800-1500 depending on the monitor. That price is outrageous, if you want to overpay for one I'll sell you mine for a thousand less than that. Check the marketplace here often, one will come up at a fair price.

The cockpit price seems to be all over the place. Bad ass if you have room for it, make sure it has the 25" monitor.

A Star Wars cockpit can be had for much less than that, even with shipping involved.

You should be able to get a decent upright cab for less than $1200 too. $3700? Someone's smokin' crack.

Tell you what: Pay me $3000 and I'll deliver a SW upright to your door. Take the $700 savings and buy yourself a plane ticket to somewhere warm. :)

Moral of the story: these cabs are way overpriced.

You guys!!!!

You guys crack me up. Yeah, everything you guys expressed is what my inner consience is saying but I am still pretty new into collecting. I read around and I saw that people get stand-ups for under 1200, but I just haven't seen them yet. I might take one of you guys up on your offer someday ;) Thanks for saving me from making a BIG mistake! -Phil

yeah the cockpit is closer to being properly priced than the upright. That prototype cockpit probably has a 25" amp monitor in it.

A local guy here (on the forum) wmacmonagle has a cockpit with 25" amp for like $4k if you are really looking for one.

Kind of agree. Star Wars has additional value beyond the typical because of it being Star Wars. I wanted to be certain to have a SW in my vintage arcade when it opened so I overpaid a bit, $1750. It's fully working though. Had I bargain picked and waited, could have saved a few hundred, so I guess it depends on how patient a person wants to be or whether other factors are there. If this was for home use, I would certainly agree that the buyer wants to wait it out.

Awsome

Wow, the number of responses that I have received on here is amazing! You are right tron guy, it does have a 25" monitor amp monitor. and it does seem more appropriately priced. I guess that is why I am more attracted to it; For that price though, you would think that the game would be in great condition. That is not the case, there is a chunk of art missing(not that big of a deal; although i could be wrong since it is prototype artwork, and that art is supposed to be somewhat different)but also the tinted overhead lexan or plexi-glass used over top of the cabinet is broken, and interior seems faded. Lucky that is all that is wrong with it, but at the same time for the price one would be paying, you think the seller would have gone ahead and fixed those things?! Yeah I agree with you as well Mike, the hardest part of building my collection has been having to be patient. Every time I see a good deal now, or a cabinet that has some sort of story or history, I quickly find myself doing research and looking into what needs to be done, and I begin weighing out if I buy it or not. I saw there is only a small margin of people on here that have over 51+ games. I have 3 and prob. can only fit 22 in my garage. At some point I want to rent/buy a warehouse and just deck the place out like the guy from lunar city did a while back. Man that would be solid. Djw90, You have to be one of the luckiest people Ive talked to so far, you own two a stand up AND a cockpit! that is awsome! Thank you guys all for your replies and input. I decided Im going to hold off for now at least on the stand up and wait to see if I find a better deal. Something that maybe be a great price but needs a little elbow grease ;) -Phil

I forgot

DJW90, I totally forgot! Thank you for your compliment about my avatar. My dad had an old handheld like that when I was younger that he passed down to me. I loved playing that thing!

Cool... I have one when I was a kid, also had football 2 the green one.. I found a set of both at a yard sale a few years ago.. They still work.. Awesome you have a working one...

handhelds

yeah for some reason whenever i pick up one of those old handhelds i just get lost. I could play one of those things for hours. even the old tiger electronic handhelds they sold during the late 80's and all the way through the 90's were pretty awesome. the early years were better by far though as far as sound and display in my opinion. The display always seemed sharp and clear and the sounds while not complex and music like, had a fantastic set of beeps that just make you smile whenever you hear one or see someone playing one. Game-play is always clutch on those devices too. the later years though games were pushed out as a last effort to reach kids and tried to be too gimmicky like everything else (the r-zone eye flip down ones and what have you, ;( ) how we went from those portable handhelds to PS vita and nintendo 3ds's amaze me,(although i wont lie i picked up a Nintendo 3ds the other day and found it enjoyable ha-ha). i have lost touch with the handheld world though; my last purchase in that department would either be a game.com or a neo-geo pocket :) I had like 3 psp's given to me through out high school and college, but they ALWAYS somehow got stolen when i was in gym class or working out. People never cease to amaze me. I guess that is why I like coming here and posting/reading. I feel like i can relate to you guys in some ways and that you guys are like me. Some of you guys have even gone out of your way to help me which is more than i can say for 70 percent of the people that I deal with on an everyday basis. Anyway, Just wanted to say thanks.

Maybe you'll get lucky and someone nearby you will have a Star Wars they would be willing to part with.

I agree with the previous posters that the two Star Wars that you mention on ebay are overpriced!

I have owned the cockpit and honestly for the money I would rather have the upright and two pinball machines than the cockpit.
