Genuinely curious: what is the market for something like this? Just for ppl who have a trace damaged board (which could be repaired) or something? I don't get it.

These are not meant to replace a repairable board set (although you could). These are really aimed at somebody looking to challenge themselves and build their own.
My son and I have built a Gravitar board, just finished a Star Wars main board and will start on the SW vector board next. After that we have a Quantum to build.
These are a great learning tool if you want to really get to know the boards, or if like me you want to do experiments without risking an original set.

That's genuinely cool. I would actually be interested in doing that! Curious: does the price in the end, equal out to around the same as a working used set, a bit more, or a bit less?

To build a set will cost between $800- $1K and take a good 20-30 hours to build. It has $200 worth of pokeys on it and the stereo delay chip is unobtainable( can be bypassed).
In contrast I will sell you a original working set in the metal EMI cage with the EMI board for $700 shipped.
Working board sets go for between $550-750.

The advantage of getting these new boards and building you own set is knowledge gained and having all new parts instead of 30yo parts on cheaply manufactured boards.
