At first the only problem was that no enemy fighters would turn up on the screen. After that i lost both sound and picture:(
The machine powers up but no sound or picture.
Does anybody have a clue what the problem could be ?

I've never seen a SW board not display Tie fighters because of missing 5v, it's probably a little more complicated than that. Once you're done with the self test check all the voltages at the game PCB....+5v, -5v, +12v, +22, -22 and the 10.3v (the 10.3v will probably be out by a small amount, don't worry about it though)
If they check out good then check the +15v and -15v test tags on the PCB (on the AVG board).
I expect self test will report divider and or mathbox problems.

He says that now he has no sound and picture. That could be a problem elsewhere. Makes no sense to troubleshoot if you don't even know what the voltages are to the motherboard. They could be way off.

I tried to put it in self test but since i have no picture, nothing shows up on the monitor.I will check the +5v first. Thanks for the tips so far:)

Check the fuses in the transformer assembly. Make sure they are good and that they are in tight. That could be your problem.

Good tip!.....where the wire attaches to the fuse holder, the tag is joined to the body of the holder itself with a rivet. If you move the tag left and right....I think its the Orange wires but it's a long time since I've looked.
