Edit: the title should read: "Atari SPRINT 2 for FREE" TYPO

So I just found out today that a co-worker of mine randomly has an Atari Sprint 2 that he wants gone. Says he got it form a guy that was tossing it and that he picked it up to turn into a MAME driver. He took it home and after some research decided that it would be too much trouble so he put it up for 4 years. He said I could have it if I wanted as he'll never do anything with it. He said he'd send a picture on his lunch hour.

I get the picture and right away, notice the CP missing. I ask him about it and he says he forgot that he had sold it on ebay. The monitor is missing too. The whole cab has been stored under his carport, covered in a tarp for 4 years. It was out in the rain, snow, everything else. He says he took the board out right when he got it and thought he just threw it away but might still have it. The sad part is, I've worked with him for 4 years and never knew or I could have saved it then.

When he first told me about it I was excited to get it and restore it but I don't think that is possible now. I may still take it and part it out, not sure yet if it's worth the time. What do you guys think?

Grab it if you don't have to drive far for it, but such a thing isn't worth trying to restore.

It is a coin door, 2 pedals, a bezel that no one will probably ever need (they hold up really well), and some scrap wires at this point.

If you pick it up I could use the spring out of one of the pedals. One is broken on my machine. I'd salvage the parts from it if I were you

I may be able to. I wonder how hard it would be to get rid of the cab afterword? I'd feel terrible chopping an arcade game up with an axe but I really do think it's a goner.

Chop away, hang the better side up in your garage. Or see if you can get a mamer to pick up the empty shell (I got rid of a couple of gutted Sprint 2's that way). With a little woodwork the cabinet is actually quite adaptable to a modern widescreen LCD mame setup.

Hey if its really a goner I wouldn't worry too much about chopping it up. It was hacked up long before you considered harvesting the rest of it. If it makes you feel better I would take both pedal assemblies, and the speakers. I'll take the coin door too if the mechs are still in it. I'd give you a fair price for your trouble.

Personally I'd take all the reuseable parts and put out a "free" offer on the shell, just incase someone needs it for a template or something, but then junk it if nobody gets interested in a reasonable time.

Result:

Well, I picked it up. Seeing games in this condition make me sad. :(

Coin counter reads 48,278 and there is a South Dakota Amusement Machine Registration tag that expired in 1989.
