atari releasing a new asteroids , premium price

Do you think they are going to recharge Gravitar? It was a flop game back in the 80's and maybe they could recharge it into something new these days. I would love to see Yars revenge next to be honest.

1. It was never a true arcade just a home console game
2. it is just a cool addicting game.

Yup.
I played a shit-ton of Yars' on my 2600

Ok, I had no idea that new games were that much, though I will agree it's "reasonable" if they were $3k over 30 years ago.

That just tells me:
a) I should buy that new Foo Fighters pin I was checking out, $5-6k isn't that bad
b) I should keep that in mind when checking out prices in our For Sale section of the forum

:D

So protests that $1 is too expensive to play a game make no sense since that is unchanged from when the classic games were released.

Also, given that some of our classic games cost $3000 or more BITD, holy crap, that means the factories were selling them for $12+K in today's dollars, making the $6K price for these reasonable by comparison (from that angle anyway).
Back then, ops could easily earn back what they paid for a good game in a matter of months. Is that new Asteroids going to pay for itself at $1 a play in 6 months? A year?

I don't know when the last time you were at a Dave and Busters, but damn near every game has a few people waiting. 90% of the games there are just "shoot everything that moves" cookie cutter type.
This one combines the nostalgia of the old game with some great updates, is really fun especially with two players and will do really well.
The 4 machines at CAX were in constant use with many people coming back to wait to play it again. I played the game for several hours on Friday and Saturday and teamed up with the same guys many times.

There's a new D&B in my area, and trust me, people aren't several deep at every game. CAX is a well-known expo that's only held once a year that probably sees several thousand attend. Yeah, in that scenario I'd expect every game on the floor to have people playing them.

I agree that the response will be different in varied markets. Here in Southern CA the D&B is slammed damn near every day.

With CAX having hundreds of vid choices the fact that these were being played constantly does say something.

I hope the Alan-1 guys post the play metrics for the machines from the weekend.

"In space nobody can hear you scream."

Because space is a near vacuum! And yet we all hear the TIE fighter's engines scream as it goes by. And we hear the distant explosions because people are too dumb to know and too lazy to care.

And we've been hearing things in space related games since Computer Space and before. Those UFOs in Asteroids were very loud in 1979. As were the exploding rocks.

So some wind during acceleration isn't really too much of a stretch. Also there really is wind in interplanetary space. So one could (weakly) argue that it adds realism to the game.

It's a game. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the immersive escapism!

I played the new game 3-4 times. It was fun. I wanted to play more to explore the gameplay but there were other priorities at the show. Also there -were- lines for Recharged. So I had to waste precious time if I wanted to wait.

Maybe. Why not?

It will only take a few months for any place with decent traffic to pay off.
Those will frequently have more than one person on them when being played I would think.
Seems like averaging 50 plays a day for 4 months shouldn't be too hard.

I had a blast answering questions and playing Asteroids Recharged on real arcade game cabinet. Thanks to the organizers of CAX, they always provide a great venue for classic arcade games. I got a couple of great photos of a parent with their son or daughter playing Asteroids Recharged together. Let's keep the passion alive and pass the torch to the next generation hoping they will appreciate the original classic arcade games as much as we did when were their age. Gack and IdahoFarmer (Grinkers Grand Palace) regressed to their younger selves while playing the game.

The game is still set in outer space... right?

Well, are you saying that if you were, say, in a space suit floating behind something like a Falcon rocket and it's engines fired up, you wouldn't feel anything hit you, no blast of any kind?

And what kind of outer space has edges that wraparound to the opposite side in an endless loop?
