Atari/Namco Assault owners: why do you love your game?

I've seen a lot of interest in this game lately and I wanted to get a feel from new and long-term owners about your love of the game. What attracted you to own the game?

My Assault has been with me since 2008, I got it with a resetting issue that I tracked down to the filter board which had cold solder joints. I gave the monitor a cap kit next and then refurbished the almost rusted through lower coin door and filled some lock bar holes on the front of the game.

My sticks are an operator hybridization of the original handles and standard 8 way micro-switch based sticks. All I can say is that it works well and looks original. I've been pretty happy with the controls even though they are not stock.

I had first seen the game only a few months prior to pickup and was very impressed with the graphic rotation effects and audio. The former owner had nicely already upgraded it to Assault Plus.

I still have some work to do on the game, the JAMMA harness connector has been cracked since before I got the game; I plan to wire a new one up so solve that little issue soon. It has been perfectly stable gameplay-wise for over four years and is a keeper for me. It looks great next to my Toobin'!

Like everyone else, I am looking forward to reproduction side art, even though it may be $125 for a set. Maybe we'll all get lucky and it'll be less expensive?

I love mine because it's one that brings back great memories for me. When I was stationed in Pearl Harbor (Navy) from 1989-92, the Pearlridge Mall had a huge arcade. Some friends and I would play there quite often. Some of the games I really loved were Assault, Twin Cobra, Beast Busters, Golden Axe. So I had to have Assault eventually. Just picked one up after all these years. Needs some work, but I'll get it running right.

I like the game because it's one of those games that you just hit start and play it. You don't need to be a pro at the stick to have fun and except for stick rebuilding, it's a cheap game to keep running. Right now I am working on a template at work for the bezles. I have made one new .040 point black paper bezel that turned out great, but I want to be able to produce them for others that may need them.

The coolest thing about Assault is the joysticks and the way they handle. It is different than any other game I have and people love to play it when they are over. Plus I love the way the cab looks.

Assault was the last game I played in real-time back in the day at an arcade that I was excited about playing. The perspective of keeping the tank centered with the rest of the world spinning around it and the super-responsiveness of the controls made the game very engaging to me, I was hooked on it. I'm surprised by how clumsy the controls are for some of my friends when they play it, but I came up playing plenty of Battlezone and some Vindicators, Assualt controls are completely intuitive to me. Another cool thing were the sounds. For that time they were very realistic in my opinion, it sounded like war.

I just got an Assault this past weekend. Wanted one for years...

They had this game at a super-ette across the street from my dad's office. I used to take the wrong school bus home so I could get to the other side of town just to play this game (or just stare at it). Then at 6 I'd book across the street to catch a ride home with Pop.

For me, it's memories- also I loved the scaling effects and the way the play field rotated.

This is a cruel thread seeing as though I've been looking for one for months and the only one to come up for sale was way overpriced and wouldn't be talked down.

Will someone bring me their Assault to Allentown for me?

I played the crap out of Assault as a kid. Something about a sci-fi tank that can jump into the air and drop bombs just felt giggly great.

When one came up locally I jumped at it.

I know of a nice Assault that may be available for sale soon in NH. It has my score save and multigame installed (by me!). Let me know what you'd like to pay and I can relay that to the guy.

@Empire: That is about the nicest looking stock Assault I have ever seen.

I used to play the shit out of this game at the local Wally World when I was about 10 years old or so. It's just a really fun game.

If you don't have fond memories of it however, the game may get old for you quickly. Not a lot of variation on the end-of-level bosses or in-game action. And it can be beaten on one credit pretty easily if you're good at it.

Mine will always be a permanent fixture of my collection though. Love it.
