Anyone know what filesystem the Atari/Midway hard drive based games run on? I have wanted to explore the drives like San Francisco Rush an Gauntlet Legends and the like, but I can't seem to read them with FAT, NTFS, ext2, ext3, ext4, HFS, and many other formats. Are the drives maybe locked like the original Xbox drives, or what?

I don't know the specifics, but a few of these ran a binary data stream from the drive, there was literally no file system. Just straight ROM-style binary.

Yeah, I'm guessing not all have a file system, but some certainly do. I'm pretty sure SF Rush does (not sure of the format or anything), and IIRC I looked at Hydro Thunder, and it appeared to have Windows 95 (not surprising, as it runs on a Celeron PC). I think the newer ones have some file system as well, like Area 51 Site 4 and Rush 2049. I've never tried, but if you extract the CHD and try to mount it in Linux, you may get lucky... depending on the game. IIRC, nothing looked too interesting on the Blitz series and original Area 51 / Maximum Force. Just going by memory last time I looked though.

look into trying extracting the chds with chdman and get the .bins and other files , also try programs like isobuster on the extracted files and in isobuster search for missing files and systems
