Hey guys, maybe we could talk about one of the most popular BW games ever sold. Atari Football in the 2p version. I recently acquired one and have been playing whenever I find a sucker to join me.

I socketed my PCB and have access to both ROM sets, currently have the "punt" ROMs in there now. Also have both sets of play plexis. I went with the punt revision because I had heard other people had like it as well. After playing I am not too sure. Seems like the offense is more limited by only having 3 real plays to run.

Any input or overall thoughts on the game? What is your preference for ROM revision? Have you pinched your finger? Can you find anyone to play you? How long can you play the thing for? Fatigue is huge, I think you could probably beat anyone, if you can just outlast them.

Can you explain (or link to) details on the ROM revisions? Just for the uninitiated like me.

I love collecting info on Atari ROM revs, which I think are under (or just un) documented.

Would be nice to have a kit (or at least a mod) that would let multiple sets be installed on one board, as has been done for other Atari boards.

Yeah man, that was a blast the other night. Holy crap though...my arms were spent and had some palm bruises from wailing on the trackballs!

I'd have to play the original ROMs again for reference but the yes, limited options with the punt in there. And personally, in that level of game, I'm much more likely to want to go for it on 4th & 20 than punt! Go hardcore!

And to think you won by a damn point...cheap-ass running touchdowns. Whatever!

The best way to explain the ROM differences is with a picture of the play plexis. Also, this is what would make it difficult to have a switchable ROM to play both types. You have to know what play you are selecting.

Maybe if you were to replace the plexis with LCD screens that would show different plays depending on which ROM revision was selected....just kidding of course :)

Original ROM: 2 run plays, 2 pass plays, dotted lines are passes

Revision ROM: 1 run play, 2 pass plays, and the option to punt

The way the game plays, you could technically "run" on any play. You just don't pass.

I wonder why Atari did this. Normally revisions are just bugfixes. This required new artwork.

I will play against anyone who challenges me at Funspot during Brofest 2018.

Marty.

I just like the game. I haven't played it since BITD.
And I was just looking to drum up a way to meet fellow KLOV'ers.

My brother's got the 2-player, and I burned him a set of the Punt ROMs several years ago, but he was never interested in installing them because of the limitation of remaining offensive plays. Sure, you could run on punt, but just not the same. Everything I've ever heard feed-back wise was that folks liked the original ROMs more.

As fun as the 2-player is, the 4-player is twice that. We used to play 2-player on the 4-player Football all the time - each person controlling 2-trackballs. If you think your hands are tired/sore, give that a go for several rounds :)

Nice! I love it too and always play someone at Grinkfest. I was fishing for some high level strategys, or sneaky tricks, because rolling the ball like hell is wearing me out!
