I have an Atari football 2 player that is not working. In self test I get a bad ram error. It does not give an address. In self test screen everything looks good except the player 1 "X" does not scroll the whole screen like player 2 "O". It seems to jump over 1/4 of the screen in the middle if this means anything? I am just looking for a good place to start. I do not have much in the line of diagnostic equiptment. Thank you.

First things first, verify your voltages AT THE PCB. Make sure your edge connector is OK. These things can cause spurious RAM errors and other weirdness.

And check for all the usual stuff, make sure that all the chips are seated properly...

Once you've verified you have good power, you can start diagnosing the board. A quick and dirty test is to get a couple RAM chips, and piggy back the existing RAMs one at a time and see what happens, usually when you find the bad one it either works or at least changes the symptom a bit. Of course, depending on the fault, it might not help, but it's super quick and sometimes saves a lot of time.
