I've been restoring other machines but eagerly awaiting this one. Atari Canyon Bomber, 1977. This will be an ongoing thread during the restore process.

B&W, 23" CRT. No color filters but there's a custom-fitted plexi over the monitor (visible in one of the images below). Single button control per-player. You push the button once each round, that's it. I like these timing games that seem so simple.

This is from a warehouse buy earlier this year. The cab was filthy from dust and required cleaning in several stages. First the leaf blower, then vacuums and brushes, finally simple green.

After cleaning up the cab is in pretty good shape. No moisture. Some cracks in the front laminate. Typical scuffing on the sides, the right side art seems to have been preserved better than the left. There's a significant ding in the bottom-right -front.

Sides are ply with a very thin veneer on the top, front is ply with a 1/32 or 1/16 veneer. The side art was silk-screened at the factory with the typical slap-dash accuracy. I've look at images of multiple cabs, they're all different with regard to placement of colors & outlines.

The bezel glass and the interior are in very good shape, and I really like the original art on this cab. This will be getting a full cosmetic restore.

Insides are all there

except the monitor. Seller told me it was necked and couldnt be tested. The tube wasn't necked, instead I found this !

Atari used either Motorola M7000s or TEC TV-623s in their 23" games of this era. This was a TEC-623 but someone stole the boards right off it. The tube works just fine. I've sourced both an M7000 and another TV-623 at this point, plan is to move the tube over to one or the other, whichever works better. We will see.

Damn, that looks great overall. Such a killer game and one hell of an art package. Weird that the chassis would be snatched but hey, at least the tube works. Good on ya!

Control panel is metal with no dents ! It's all there but the button aprons got smashed at some point. Old stock replacements have been sourced.

Funny thing: Removing the button aprons shows just how yellowed the paint has become. Un-yellowing would probably require repainting everything including the text so the colors may have to stay as they are. Allowing for that this will touched up to as close to factory as possible.

Look at the 'white' under the volcano buttons above, and do you see the color difference below? Its more noticeable in person.

Coin door is owl eyes all the way. Someone drilled holes in it for an extra lock :( . I may source a replacement door, may have this fixed, or may leave it.

I know what I'm doing with the chrome though. ( A couple of Pepper II coin slots in the second photo if you're wondering).

Cab had no back doors when I got it. Cruising the internets found me these pics:

My belief is that pic 1 with the ribs ( for @hisnice 's pleasure) is probably factory correct as 1) there's no convenient place inside the top of the cabinet for a lock pawl to latch, and 2) all three machines ( the two pictured and mine) have clear evidence of screw holes on the sides of the top panel. Not required if a lock's supposed to be there.

My replacement doors

After the test fitting I went back and routed the air-hole \ handle in the bottom door. I also went ahead with a pre-emptive treatment of wood hardener on the edges of the particle board, I hate this stuff as a building material.

Next steps:

- determining the process to restore the cabinet and art
- monitor build
- determine status of the PCB & fix if required ( probably required and probably my weakest skill )
- new cardboard shroud
- clean \ restore the plexi monitor cowl and glass bezel

and a hundred other things I havent thought of. will post pics as I finish steps.

Everything about this thread brings me pleasure (not just the ribs). Do you have a working board? I have at least 1 that works and the one in my game right was repaired a few years ago but is flaking out again :(

Troubleshooting can be easier if you have a known working board so let me know if you want to borrow one :)

I've been waiting for you do dive into this project. Beautiful game. Super fun!

I really need a Canyon Bomber. I'll keep passively looking.
While I look, this thread makes me me happy!

I don't know. I have one from the machine and another from a separate purchase but dont know the status of either.

My PCB test bench is just about ready, need to purchase a few edge connectors this weekend and craft a few cables. Ill ping you next week I may take you up on that offer.

44 Pos edge connectors ordered.

First board below is from the machine. Looks to be in good shape, presuming the jumper line on the board and a single jumper under were factory installed. Second board has evidently been bumping around in someones storage bag for a while, worse shape but may be OK as well. Minimal evidence of heat issues in the power section.

This is my first time working with the Atari RF Shield card. The connector is split on the end, I'll probably replace it. Can the PCB be run without the RF shield board during testing on the bench?

The cabinet as been stripped and handed off to my graphic artist friend to work on restoring the silk screening. I can handle templates, laminates and decals but Id rather have someone with better painting and color matching skills do the restoration on this one. Im going to try to have everything else ready by the time I get the cab back so Im working on the electronics first.

The 44-pin edge connector RF shield board was cracked and the connector was bulging in the middle, no good. Replaced it with a new one.

Reviewed the PCB for any physical trouble spots and really its in pretty good shape. One open solder joint. Couple of places where they made wire jumpers or cut traces, appears to be all factory. Tomorrow Ill check out the power and transformer.

Huh, surprised you couldn't find a green version of that connector on mouser?

The game looks great BTW. Glad you're putting so much work into fixing it up!

Those were from APAR and i don't think I knew the color on the Canyon Bomber at the time. I was buying several as I need to make adapters for testing several upcoming boards.

I'm trying to keep focus on the game, I have several lesser restores trailing off and on right now as well. This week should be a push.

Futzing with an MCI Airball and Bandido today. Only thing Canyon Bomber was experimenting with coin door painting and powder coating, pics to come.

Meantime, small steps:

Airball, Bandido & Canyon Bomber...you must get bored playing around with those common titles.
