For last year's Free Play Florida event in Orlando I had an idea to build this thing and went very quickly from concept to playing game but we had to do it with a computer and LCD at the time. You could tell it was a pc and I wanted to make it original Atari guts with a CRT so that's what's been done. It plays spot on fantastic now, can't wait for Todd Rogers to play it again.

The cab is pretty much a clone of a Tempest cabaret, I drew up some Kaboom art that This Old Game printed up for me super quick. Laser cut some ABS plastic with wood trim to mimic the old Atari look and away we went. The atari itself has an RGB mod and pulling audio direct from the board to the tv thanks to KI4SWY here on Klov :) So much fun doing off the wall builds!

Kaboom! Such an awesome game. Play'd it for many hours on the 2600.
I would have never thought to see it as a full arcade vid. What "original Atari guts" is inside?

The guts inside is an Atari 2600 Jr with all the wiring direct soldered to the board mounted behind the marquee. It's also running a copy of Todd Rogers' One Bucket Kaboom that todd kindly gave to me at last year's event. The spinner is a real 2600 paddle controller with the pot mounted in the panel using the original spinner knob.

this was quite a good idea.

It totally makes sense considering how good that particular game is.

I've been gathering stuff to use the idea, too.
Found a 2600 with bad switches so I added wiring directly to it for use as the guts on a cab.
finally found a working but junk set of atari paddles.

Thanks!

Maybe it's not so pretty on the inside? LOL :001_sconfused:

There's really not much to see. Right behind the marquee an atari 2600 jr is decased and mounted to the bottom and wires go straight to the panel and out to the RGB mod that goes direct to the tv. 95% of the cabinet is literally empty.
