Historical Source has been uploading game source code for a while now.

OK so it's out of bronze age now.

As well as gravitar, tempest, space duel, battlezone, centipede, millipede

Dig dug and kangaroo are licensed, so unfortunately we only have the roms that were provided to Atari.

Kudos to whomever released these! It inspired me to spend a little more time on the Sky Raider I've had sitting around for a while. Just needed a prom replacement, so it's back up and running now. One more saved!

man I wish I had a sky raider. All the overlays and tricks with video are so cool. I only recently learned that the monitor was modified to get the effect and there's a sticker on the tube to say that.
cool game

What mod was done?

EDIT: Ooooh! I just watch a gameplay video. That's *AWESOME*!!!!
Any pictures of the sticker on the tube?

I watched like 10-20 videos on this game. and i have 0% zero clue wtf u are all on about...

plz help
Look closely! Not only is the width increasing at the bottom, but the vertical speed is changing too! It really gives a sense of scale and speed. And it's smooth too. Holy hell that's amazing!!!!

This game came out in 1978. While it's theoretically possible that they could have done that smooth horizontal scaling and vertical acceleration using TTL game logic and a 1MHz 6502, or even some Atari customs, the associated cost would have quickly shot down the Sky Raider project. (pun intended)

I'm guessing that they modified the linearity circuits in the monitor itself to distort a normal rectangular display. If that's what they did, it's absolutely genius level work! Maybe simple to implement...maybe. But the idea is simply brilliant.

I had no idea that this game playfield was distorted like this. I'll be digging into the "how" of it after I return from vacation.

It's amazing the things people can come up with when they're resource-constrained. That's why there isn't stuff like this today in society, and so much stuff is boring. We all have too much of everything.

Limiting your options is great for creativity.

That's exactly what they did.

Sadly I bought parts from a Sky Raider from a local (at the time) store that was gutting the cab -- they wouldn't sell it whole because they "needed the monitor to fix a space invaders".
Boy were they in for a surprise.

IIRC from bringing the board up, some of the distortion is done on the board as well, but I haven't had that on my bench in 20 years.
