I know the AR-I-01 and AR-I-03 are "almost" interchangeable. My question: is there any difference between them besides the 1000uf vs 3000uf caps? I.e., can you change a -03 to a -01 via a cap swap?

The 4-pin connector that run to the speaker can be different. One is a 4-pin inline type, the other is a 4-pin matrix. If i'm remembering correctly, the "03" version has solder pads to accommodate both styles of connector......so either could have been loaded.

There are a few differences between the -01 (Asteroids, LL, Football) and the -03 (Asteroids Deluxe) ARs...

It's not just a matter of a different cap value (and the speaker connector).

The -01 has an "audio disable" capability (pin 7 on J7), and associated components (Q4, Q6 etc). The -03 lacks this functionality. I know Asteroids doesn't use the audio disable feature; I'm not sure about LL and Football.

The input circuits are a little different on the -03, with the addition of R15/R16 between the signal and GND (not present on the -01). Also, the value of C6/C15 is 10*uF on the -01, and 0.22uF on the -03. I suppose this will affect the frequency response somehow...

FWIW, the feedback loop (and thus gain) appears to be the same on both.

And, as you've noted, the output coupling caps are different values.

Just took a look at the schematics. LL also doesn't use audio disable; 4 Player Football DOES. As far as I can tell, it's the only one that needs that feature of the -01.

Thanks, all! I had the chance to grab a -03, but I passed; too much effort to mod it for asteroids.

I'll grab a -01.

I think you can tie a ground to the base of one of the MUTE trannys (the trannys are tied together. Yeah I just said that. :)) and it should work like a -03. Then there's the small matter of the 4-pin connector.
