OK.. So I fired up my Asteroids and left it running for about an hour. Heard a faint pop when I was in the other room..went to check it out and the monitor is still on..still has picture. However..the picture is very large..like 3x normal. I had capped this monitor like 6 yrs ago..but not logged that many game hours on it. Its been stored for most of that time and rarely fired up. I did not smell any electrical burn or see any smoke. My friend suggested it may be a high voltage diode getting over heated and failing. The screen was back to normal after the game was turned off and cooled down.

Anyone have a part location on the HV and a value?

I have looked.. nothing is obviously burned or looks out of the ordinary.

same thing happened to me..

I had the same problem. I changed the HV diode, and it instantly fixed the problem. I put some diaelectric grease in the end sockets to make a better connection. My old diode was almost crumbling, and the poor connection in the socket may of caused the popping.

hope this helps. I got the diode from arcade parts or bob roberts.

Cool. You'd think they could start including this in the cap kits since these monitors are over 30 years old.

Would this diode be the possible problem I am having? When I fire up Asteroids Deluxe the screen is about 20% larger that it should be. (C) ATARI is off the screen at the bottom... as I let it warm up the screen tightens up in about 5-7 minutes the screen looks great (the (C) Atari is on screen as it's supposed to)...

now you know why it is not included in the cap kit.

check with Aracdeshop

Yeah..I'll do that. Also need to line up a few other purchases as well. I hate wasteing shipping cost on one item.

Yes, blooming can be caused by a bad HV diode or too much grease in the ends of where the diode goes. Bob Roberts has a write up on too much grease and not making good contact.
