I have an old Atari A.P.B. machine. Love this game, but recently it started acting up. First couple of times I fired it up, I got nothing but a scrambled screan and game would not play blind. Once I moved the machine back to my garage, I got the same thing, but occasionally the game fires up and goes into the RAM/ROM check screen. Here's what it displays:

QUICKCHECK

RAM 0: OK
RAM 1: OK
RAM 2: OK
RAM 3: OK

ROM: OK

6502: Try (1,2,3,4) Failed

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Any help would be appreciated!

6502 is a microprocessor on the CPU pcb. Look at 5-18, & 19 in the manual for the location on the board.

I'd start by pulling out the chip (note the orientation), and carefully cleaning the legs with an eraser, or wire brush (lightly). Then reseat the chip, and try it out.

If it is the processor, this may be what you're looking for:

Someone more experienced may have a better source for the 6502.

Hope this gives you a step in the right direction.

Thanks for the help. I'll pull that apart today and give the connectors a good once-over.

Nice to see another APB owner.. How goes the hunt for the APB Seat? After seeing a few posts on it, I want one for my machine too! lol

Well, pulled the board and went over all the chips and cleaned them up. Plugged the board back into the machine, and no dice. Still erroring in the same way. Looks like I'll have to go the route of finding another 6502 IC...

That would be my next move. I hate to hear about a broken APB!

My APB came with 2 non-working board sets. I'm definitely still a novice in diagnosing pcb issues, but I think I have the problems on my boards figured out, just need to order parts.
I had been holding onto a board set for a while, and didn't know if it had worked. Luckily it did, so I got lazy on the repairs to the others.

I'm still looking for the seat frame. I bought a NOS seat top from billybob.
Retroactive drew some nice plans here: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=106366
I have a friend making a frame for me at his work, but it may take a while, or may not even happen at all.

Keep me posted on your progress as you get APB running again!
