Atari 2600

I have got to tell you, the recently shown conversion of "Star Castle" for the 2600 is REALLY impressive.

I can remember back when I brought home a copy of Pac Man for the 2600, and the reality was SO DISSAPOINTING. It was absolutely horrible and no fun to play. I remember playing Adventure for hours and hours. When I went over to a certain friend's house, he would play Pitfall! a LOT. Asteroids was one of my favorites, although the experience was not an acceptable substitute for the original arcade game. I think that Berzerk was perhaps one of the most "authentic feeling" arcade ports for the system. Space Invaders was decent due to the simplicity of the arcade game, but not a faithful conversion. Yar's Revenge was truly the best "original" game for the 2600, but I think that the issue with bringing Star Castle to the 2600 was NOT in the capabilities of the system. I had always heard that they could not get the rights to the game, so the programmer had to take the concept and what he had done so far and take the game into a different direction. The Vectrex is the only system that I am aware of that ever offered a home port of that game.

I moved on to the Colecovision and an Atari XL computer. The game "Rescue of Fractalus" for the Atari home computers was a marvel for it's time. Some hacker had stolen it off of Lucasart's server and it was distributed out in the wild before the game was finished. Eventually the game was released into the marketplace, but I don't think that it sold well because so many people already had the bootleg copy...

Yeah, that Star Castle is awesome. I was there when he was demo'ing it (you can actually see me walk by in the video :D ) I too was disappointed with Pac-Man (I think my mom got it for me the day it came out, I wanted it so bad). DK was also pretty disappointing. I did think they did a pretty good job with Ms Pac (even though it had different mazes than the arcade, at least it had 4 separate mazes). Pitfall II was a really good game too, with the music and the shear size of the level.

The Atari carts were too expensive.
Yeah, but I had the fabulous tape recorder ! I even wrote a basic program to make -uhhm- safety back-ups of games because you never knew what would happen with those damn tapes ;)

I was always very envious of older guys that could afford a disk drive, but once I had one, I had stacks of floppies. There was no internet, but we had contacts around the globe anyway :)

Yup and it was called "Behind Jaggy Lines".... I will always remember the first them one of the aliens appeared and started banging the windshield.......scared the shit out of me !!!

Brilliant game it is.

I played some of the 2600 classics last night but I still don't get what captivated up for hours.

The very reason why I sold my Space Invaders cab. I mean, I love the cab, I love the part of arcade history it is, but I just can't play that game anymore. Strange, because I still love to play Galaxian....

Some other great notables....River Raid, Frostbite and my all time favorite Keystone Kapers.... Colecovision was my all time fav. but 2600 is right up there!

I had a tape drive for a while. Didn't know anyone else with an Atari computer. Wish I didn't miss out on all the trading... Aren't you supposed to have been an Amiga guy or something since you live in Europe? ;)

Didn't trade apple or atari software on the BBS'es, but did my share of SNES, PC, and Amiga software liberation.

Demon Attack and Chopper Command were my favs, though I did play A LOT of Asteroids and Centipede on the old Vader. I really liked the odd games like 'Name this Game', 'Entombed', Riddle of the Sphinx" and "Journey Escape".

Entombed kicked ass. Ghostbusters was pretty good as well. I still have the game with the box and instruction book. The SwordQuest games were a bitch though. E.T. still gives me nightmares. Keep dreaming of falling down pits and not being able to get out.

I loved Entombed. Take an archeology-themed maze game and make it more exciting by having the whole maze scroll up as you have to move down, knowing that when you see your only escape scroll out the top of the screen, YOU ARE DEAD. Great game.

i broke out the atari the other night and a friend brought over a bag of games, theres nothing wrong with the system, you just have to play the games that were designed for it by people who spent the time getting it right, like activision. river raid i am looking at you!!!

Guess I need to dust off the ol' 7800 and pull it from out of the box in storage under the basement stairs. A while back, I went to a "antique show" and saw a bunch of 2600 and 7800 cartridges that I perceived to be "rare", so I picked them up. But as of this moment, I have not tried any of them. My son is into the retro stuff like me (although he likes mostly shooters and 80's/90's stuff), so he might be interested in trying some of these old games out as well.

That "Harmony" cartridge is interesting. I can see it now. Beat 'em and eat 'em and Custer's Revenge on a flash cart!

For a LONG TIME now, I have been thinking how AWESOME it would be to create a "challenge" for modern game developers. Someone should hold a contest with something like $50,000 in prize money (for motivation) to see who can make the BEST game for the 2600 hardware with no limitation on ROM size. Anything goes. Digitize 3D models if you want. Anything that you can come up with, so long as it runs on the original hardware. Wouldn't that be cool as a "draw" for a GDC or something???

Seen Halo 2600?

Have you googled Amiga lately? They are still producing NEW hardware for it. Just saw a device that interfaces IDE, ethernet, and SD memory. Crazy..

Yeah, crazy stuff. I check some blogs for Apple ][ stuff once in a while. A group of guys are working on an Apple //gs laptop of all things. Ok, back to 2600. I may need to get one of those carts that was linked too. Would not mind downloading some Activision games and see how they held up.

I just sampled Halo 2600 for a minute, and to be quite honest, I thought that the Star Castle port is a lot more impressive. It just seems like something that could have been done back when the system was new. Perhaps I didn't play it long enough or something...
