At what point is a collection an "arcade?"

Its not an arcade unless you have friends over PLAYING those games and having a good time. ;)

When I called around different local cities for operating with their city limites they set the bar at 5+ machines needing an arcade permit... if they had something in the rules.

I think that if other people consider your machines an arcade then so be it...

I'd say 6+ begins feeling like an arcade, especially if you have the gameroom decor, which I sadly do not.

Hey now, nothing wrong with a simple approach decor-wise. The arcade I frequented was pretty plain jane, and I'm totally not a trinket kind of guy anyway, so I'm going for the simple approach. Carpet, blacklights, arcade style paint color for the walls, a few signs, a few things hung on the walls, and that's about it.

Its not a real arcade without a change machine.

Good call. And I'm covered on that front!

I guess I consider mine a arcade. Only 20 machines in the house another 50 in the garage. Cant play the one in the garage though. no room.

Only? Do you see my eyes rolling over here?

Seriously...

Just goes to show that people will *always* take things for granted given enough time and any opportunity at all! :p

Arcade

My thought is....... If I fill up hte room as much as I can then its an arcade. But I dont mean a closet sized room. I have 9. But 7 are inside and one is being restored and the other Im not so interested in. But I still have room for4 more in the room. I just need the cash.

I have 5 cabs, which according to the Oxford English dictionary constitutes an arcade/game room.

An interesting thought then: if 5 in a room makes an arcade.. For those of us with multiple rooms with 5+ games in them, does that mean we have arcades?

Now, last night I was at a member's home for the weekly Toronto Pinball League (Topl.org) and ALL the person owned was pinball machines. Around 20. By definition, would you consider it an 'arcade' ... or a 'pinball arcade'? Personally, I wouldn't consider it an arcade without at least 4 vids or other type of games.

According to Websters dictionary, an arcade is:
A place with "many" games that can be played by putting coins in them.

According to Websters dictionary, "Many" is:
— used to refer to a large number of things or people.

According to Websters dictionary, "Large" is:
great in size or amount.

So, I still don't have an answer...
If you have many games, or a large amount of games, you have an arcade.
I think I have an arcade? :)

The way I always saw it was, if its a business, its an arcade.
If it's in your house, its a game room.

I have 10 games in my basement...I still call it my basement. I think to call it an arcade, you need:
1. A dedicated room. Basements cut it, but garages don't. Garages are where your car should be stored, not your crap...not matter how pretty your crap is.
2. Proper decor. Walls, lights, and posters (era appropriate)...carpeting is a bonus.
3. Enough games to fill your wall space. Its gotta be more than 5 (15+?) and should wrap around corners. There need to be enough games where you can say, "Holy crap!"

I have a very nice collection of restored games...but I don't have an arcade. I have 10 games that completely fill 1 wall of my basement, but the rest of the room has furniture with my TV and surround sound system (some people would call it a theater, but that's another discussion). I have neat Disney attraction posters, and nice carpet, but it doesn't feel like an arcade. It has to have that feeling...

Im on free play too. I have been looking for a nice change machine. When I find one im going to either go quarters or tokens.

If you don't mind shipping I have about seven change machines for sale ranging in price from $50.00-$100. From small skinny up to the big brown Rowe.

Just curious at what point people would consider their collection legitimately called an arcade. I have 5 machines (1 MAME) and while I think that's decent, my basement lacks a certain "atmosphere" where I'd be really be comfortable telling people I have an arcade down there.

Thoughts?

An arcade it when your vision of expectations starts to meet your reality, and you become satisfied.

+1

I have 3 vids and one MAME and I consider it an arcade. Even back when I only had just the MAME machine it was an arcade.

(Although I just moved to TN from WI so I don't have many friends yet.) But I figure with an arcade that will soon change. LOL. The machines will be brought down the end of Oct and already I have a few of my fiance's friends boyfriends/husbands ready to play during our Halloween party.

It's not quantity, its quality and having all games up playable and room to play them. Like someone else said, you must have pins too, to be an arcade. If you don't have all games playable, it's just a collection.

And it's not an arcade unless the machine can take money and has the coin parts inside to do it! :)
