I've been working on my Astroids and now I have only half a screen. Also, there are lines between objects on the screen. Any ideas?

Yes, monitor problem. You may have bad frame transistors, however these are sometimes a symptom of other issues with the deflection board.

Check the transistors (see the v1.1 black and white vector monitor FAQ, Appendix B for how to test). Also check the wiring. Absolutely reflow the connector header pins for all connectors on the deflection board, as this is the most common issue with these, and they are always cracked if they haven't been reflowed.

Post pics of the deflection board, so we can see which monitor you have. I have replacement rebuilt deflection boards for b/w vector monitors ($75 shipped with trade in) should you find it's something you can't figure out.

its going to be hard to do much when the board is that filthy. i would wash it in the sink and let it dry for a couple days then look at it again.

For cleaning, see here:

That's an Electrohome G05-801. The best designed and built b/w vector monitor IMO, and what originally came in most Asteroids cabs. They are really solid, and it's easy to see how they began to cut corners and pinch pennies when they went to the G05-802, as everything about them got more flimsy and cheap.

You can remove all of the boards, wash them, let them dry in front of a fan overnight, then start checking things. You should also replace the small electrolytic caps on all of the boards. Just get yourself a cap kit from iankellogg.com.

Replace the caps, reflow the headers, test and replace the frame transistors (if needed), and that's 80% likely to fix it (though it's stuff you should do anyway, so it's not a waste of time, even if that doesn't do it.)

Thanks for that link. I found this link for parts but it doesn't match up to Ian kellogs list under that monitor. I'm very capable of resodering but finding the exact parts and quantity is a different story. I appreciate the help guys

yup i also stock all the headers, pots, transistors, etc. if you need and not just cap kits. let me know if you have trouble finding something, i would be happy to point you in the correct direction.

You just want one cap kit for the G05-801, to start.

The other parts are the transistors used on the frame/heatsinks, and on the deflection board. You only need to replace these if they are actually bad, which you can test with a DMM. See the b/w vector FAQ, or google how to test a transistor. You may want to test them before you order, and only get them if needed.

Also, there are many substitutes you can use for the 2N5884/5886 (which are substitutes for the original 2N3716's and 2N3792's). Ian likes to sell those subs, but any of the ones on this page will work. Also, you can find them elsewhere for less, if you end up actually needing them.
