I fired up a game on MAME yesterday just out of the blue called Astro Blaster. It's a 1981 Sega game. I'd not ever played before.

I was VERY surprised at how kickass the voice sounds! It's amazing how far things advanced from 1980 (Wizard of Wor, Berzerk, Gorf) to 1981 (Astro Blaster). The voice sounds freakin' AWESOME... almost Battlestar Galacticaesque. The game isn't half bad either.

Now I want a dedicated cab... damnit.

Love the game! One of my favorites back in the early 80s. I actually own both an upright and a mini. Besides the fact that it has cool speech, the game levels seem to go on forever. I beat over 20 different enemy types and never saw them repeat.

Astro Blaster is one of my "must haves". Its an awesome game.

I've not seen even a boardset for sale.....

Happens to me all to often. Play some awesome game for the first time in Mame, check out klov for the details of the cab, and add it the "wish I owned one of those" list.

It has its detractors - and I understand why - but MAME has done a lot to kick this hobby up a notch.

Great game. My 6 yr old just loves it, (as do I)!

I'm shocked FF that with all your expertise, you have never seen that before.

It's a bit embarrassing I must admit.

It looks a little like some Activision from the era I remember... Megamania or something?!

I just don't remember the game from anywhere I played back in the day.

I'm scared to build a MAME, as I already have little time for this hobby. I could easily waste away playing games and remembering "oh yea, I forgot that game"....

So I'm going strictly by memory - I think AB has "secret" bonuses, like for not missing targets, or never overheating, etc. for various waves.

It definitely kept me interested. I can only remember seeing one BITD and it was at a remote arcade (ie, we had to be driven to it) to play there.

MAME takes some significant amount of my time away from projects, but I don't mind at all because for me it is more about playing and having fun. MAME adds to the fun by allowing you (re)discover some really cool games like Astro Blaster. Think I will play some of that tonight!

AB

I had a cocktail version of it. There are 2 rom sets for it. Ver. 1 and Ver.2. Version 1 was deemed unplayable because the difficulty. That thing would just steal your quarter. Not much fun. Ver. 2 was much better. Mine had Ver. 1 Does MAME have both versions? Or just Ver. 2.
