I have always wanted a nice asteroids. Love the game, and the cabinet.
I have found the nicest I have ever seen. In and out like out of the box.

I am buying it for 800. How much did you pay for yours?

I personally believe this is on the upper end of what should be paid for a classic, and in this market probably 100 over...but the machine is so nice I had to buy it.

I will post pics when she is in the arcade. I am only transporting it 10 miles..but rest assured it will be seal wrapped and handled very gently. I don't want to put the first mark on it.

Please validate my purchase with your own stories of indulgence.:004_ssmile:

Mint condition, and if I had the money?

$600 maybe tops? Would consider $800 if I had surplus moolah.

This is a verified classic game, and if it were mint, a collectible.

If it's not mint, then it's another of thousands of Asteroids out there....maybe worth less.

Oh, to qualify this post, I did buy an Asteroids...for $100. BUT that was in 1997; with many factors changing the price. And no, it was not mint but yes, it was working.

other than a repro control panel all original and without a scratch. I know the history and the fella pretty well. He is very particular.

I did also get him to toss in some Dk side art... I am working on a DK restore...So i guess you could say I paid 730ish. knowing you paid a hundred...really makes me believe this hobby is going to be my downfall.

I have 4 right now. One of them I have $700 into. Its very nice. I dont think what you paid is that far off in its condition. Your keeping the machine. If you sell it it might take awhile to get that back out of it.

This is a keeper.. asteroids is likely the game I play more than any others. I had a cocktail, but always wanted an upright. I sold my nice cocktail for 400 last week. I had 3 other machines withing driving distance for 500 and under that were uprights.. but 10 miles away and mint...made 800 seem almost affordable. I should be buying my wife a new fridge. Hell she makes more money than I do...she should buy the fridge.

Well according to exidys price guide you paid what a mint one should go for , $800 .

http://www.arcade-classics.com/price_guide.html

You know though , it really doesn't matter how much you pay for a game , if its one you REALLY want and plan on keeping then the price really doesn't matter .

I want a Galaxian and those don't sell for much . But I have a feeling when I find a nice one , I will be paying more than what it usually goes for because I REALLY want one and if its in nice condition I won't mind paying a little extra .

10 miles away ! Yes thats VERY tempting not to pass up . I hate driving really far to get a game ,

I agree if you love the game and you're happy with the price then it's never too much. I may have overpaid for my first DK, but I wanted it and it was in damn fine condition so I bought it. Asteroids is a game I would love to have - congrats on the purchase - Barry

i had a truly mint one i paid $600 for, sold it for $1150 after i was done playing it.
so i think your ok, right in the middle there.
congrats,

sometime I just need to know I am not a complete fool, just partly.

I sold two games to get this one...so another upshot is I get to look for another machine... and spend more money to fill that hole in my arcade...or is it in my head.

Everyone has a grail of sorts that they would cross the line and buy so nothing wrong here and you'll probably find someone someday that will gladly pay as much (maybe more) for your machine than what you just did. These are the kindest words i've ever written about an Asteroids machine, we have a chronic abundance of these here and i junk every one i get my hands on. Enjoy your purchase and sleep well.

Price is not out of line and if this is a game you really want. Then there should be no question. enjoy your grail....

I paid just under 200 for mine, nice shape but some wear on the cpo, and will need a cap job soon.
The thing about asteriods is its an integeral part of the gameroom. I dont seem to be able to walk thru there without stopping to play a game (definitely a grail to me), and one of my more played games at gettogethers.

You did ok on your price. Im on a budget so I looked a long time before lucking into the one I got. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine:D

If you're ok with the price, that's all that's important, don't worry what we think.

But your comment above is what bothers me. How can a game be so mint on everything else but need a repro control panel? Something seems out of whack. What's the story, did it get hit with a sledge hammer by accident? Does it have a CPO on it? If you are going for the mint original look, a CPO on an Asteroids will stick out like a sore thumb, as the original CP art was paint on metal. Even the most casual of collector will recognize that.

Not flaming you at all, just pointing out things you might want to consider. If the rest of the game is as mint as you say, I'd be trying to find an original CP for it (which I think will be difficult to find a mint one).

Even though there are thousands of Asteroids out there, it's very very difficult to find an unrestored original mint one because the game was so popular.

All that matters is that you are happy with what you paid...

Congrats on picking this up. Minty vectors don't grow on trees, and it sounds like you're going to get your money's worth out of it.

Almost anyone who only casually knows me thinks of me as not just cheap, but super cheap. Probably a lot of truth to that, but part of it is because I don't boast about stuff I've overpaid or just spent a lot of money on in general (FYI, I don't brag about cheap buys either). However, I have many, many times paid big money, and many times knowingly overpaid for an item I wanted, hobby video game related or not.

I can think of several examples, but here's a couple, I paid $500 plus $60 shipping for a used, dirty, known not working 19" monitor with some slight burn in (WG19K6401). I paid $500 for a totally empty stripped cabinet, missing the front glass, CP, everything, just the bare wood, even one side of the t-molding was missing (Quantum). I drove 8 hours each way to get it besides. I'm guessing most would think I overpaid on both items. It wasn't like I was a newbie and didn't know what I was getting/paying. No one twisted my arm to make those purchases, and I know I wouldn't ever be able to sell them for that amount, then or now. I just wanted them.

I have non-game examples too, but as I said, I think it's kind of dumb to want to brag/boast about overpaying for something. I won't be surprised if you don't get many replies with other people's stories.

Asteroids

I paid 100$ for mine then sunk around 650$ and a hell of a lot of work into it. It is like a new one now. If it is a must have game 800 is worth it to me. How many real nice ones are still out there anyways?

I have replaced the tube since these pic was taken.

I paid $255 for mine, did some bondo work and paint touch-ups, new t-molding and had the monitor rebuilt. After I had it all done, I sold it to Killerkades for $450.

I love Asteroids.

I paid $599 for mine and it had the high score save kit and the previous owner had done a lot of work to it. I have never had to put a dime into it, unlike other games I own.

This was several years ago, when I got back into arcade game collecting after a 10 year hiatus. I didn't know how much games have dropped in value since the 1990s, and that it was really worth $350.

When you get into (or back into) this hobby it seems that your first games tend to be the ones you over pay for. Today, I would never pay that for an Asteroids, even one in excellent condition.

Most of my games are just average condition. My games are crammed together in my arcade building and it's very dark in there. For me, it's about a good picture and controls working right, and the marquee being lit up - not minty side art or cabinet perfection.
