Just scored a nice looking Asteroids that appears to be a two owner HUO machine. We bought it playing blind with some manner of screen collapse as demonstrated in the attached pic. According to the seller it started intermittently but has been there consistently for a while. I noticed after I left it on for about a ½ hour it horizontal gave in as well and collapsed further into a dot. I know scarcely little about monitors and nothing at all about X-Y vector. Could you all tell me where to start checking or point me to a good thread if you know of one? I'd assume there are some voltages to check before assuming diodes and capacitors, but what do I know...

Thanks everybody for any input you can suggest.

Thanks VC. Checked it and reflowed, no difference. Also I should clarify that it was REPORTED that it had been intermittent at one time. I had the impression that that was not descriptive of its current condition. I've had it plugged in in the garage for a day now and there's been no change. Any other suggestions?

Read the B&W XY Monitor FAQ.

http://www.ionpool.net/arcade/tech/bw_vector_monitor_faq.pdf

Check voltages. Check fuses. Check for "damaged/stressed" components. Check for bad connections on harness etc.

Be prepared to -> replace the chassis transistors; capkit etc.

If you have an oscilloscope, you can prove it is indeed a monitor issue and not a logic board issue.

>> reseat main logic board; check for bad edge pins
>> check for broken X/Y POTs on logic board

Don't continue to power the monitor until upgrades/fixes have been made.

(Also do a search in the KLOV technical areas for similar XY monitor issues/repairs)
