Asteroids Restoration Question

I have an early cab (serial 654) and there is no wood backing on the CP at all. It is completely metal just like the newer ones.

It should be like this:

Here is the different style switches.

The serial number is 654, Cabinet, PCB, and Monitor chassis numbers all match. It has the Owl eye coin door, but I'm not sure the coin door will be repairable, someone cut the wiring harness off of it, and I haven't looked at it close enough to see if the coin mech. is completely intact or not.

Here is the coin door adapter harness and coin mech you asked me about.

Now that I see the pic, mine does have the plywood under the CP - I was just remembering it wrong.

I think the coin door is intact also, except for the harness, why some one cut is beyond me. First thing's first, I need to get the PCB up and running - it appears to be pretty toasted, CPU is toast, and I think the PROMs are bad as well - they have a fairly low resistance between 5v and gnd.

Ive got an early asteroids cp with the wood on the back, pm me if your looking to buy one.

Here are some fresh pics I just took.

The coin mechs are long gone...

Here's a few more of the cabinet. There is a little damage on the left side at the back, but nothing a little wood putty won't fix. I'll probably paint the inside by the monitor, there are some cigarette burns right around the CP.

That is a hell of a lot nicer than mine when I got it. I had to evict some cats that had taken up residence. I had to paint mine inside and out to seal in the smell.

A quick google image search says it doesn't look that way...

I have seen a couple of LLs and a Asteroids to LL and I dont remember them being white on the inside around the bezel. Is the white on yours paint or vinyl?

Yup. My control panel has the wood back also. Interesting, mine has the black cones on the start buttons. I wonder when they switched from the aluminum finish to the black?

Isn't the yellow lettering on the bezel supposedly the early version? I wonder when it changed to white.

All the origional early ones I have seen have the silver start cones. I think the yellow lettering on the bezel changed to white after SN 16000 like everything else.

Sounds like a nice score. Living in Ohio, you can contact Alex at Elektron Forge to repair your PCB. He charges a fair price but does escellent work. He repaired both of mine. I'd definitely kkep the sideart original since that shows how rare your version of the UR is. As far as CP, definitely replace with an original type. I prefer the partial CPO because it looks more like the original to me. Congrats on your find and hopefully you'll get it working soon.

I second that! Alex fixed my Lunar Lander board and it has run solid ever since.

Interesting that the inside of the sides of the LL cabinet are white and not black. Is that similar to other LL cabinets?

Murph

My LL has no white at all on the inside.

Mine definetely has the original cones and they are black at sn 2796. I can't comment on the bezel as when I got the machine it has a Armor Attack bezel on it. Also interesting that mine does not have the owl eye coin door.

It should have the silver cones and the owl eye coin door. A lot of the coin doors were changed by ops when they realized a player could tie a string to a washer and rack up credits until the string broke. I cannot tell you why someone changed the start cones.
