Ok for anyone interested here's the repair log for the Asteroids Deluxe.

I think I got everything included here.

Asteroids Deluxe repair log

Upon power up got nothing.

Hooked up Fluke and checked Rom/Ram

Could read the Vector Side ok, but nothing from Program side.

Found Dead ls139 @ L2

Could now read program side, but not vector.

Seems Some of the pins on L2 were stuck so I could read the Vector side but upon replacement
they were no longer stuck.

Found Bad ls157's at F2, H2, J2, and K2 replaced and can no read Vector, and Program sides ok

However there were bad eproms @ D1, E/F1, F/H1, and R2 Burned new ones.

Power up and get watchdog.

Remove pin 1 from LS42 at L5 game now plays blind, but with some strange explosion sounds
and no thrust sound, just a faint pop.

Start troubleshooting VSM

Ground watchdog Disable, and game plays blind as well.

Pull and check custom prom @ C8 checks good.

Find bad Ls193 @ J4, and K4

Now greeted with a horrible picture.

Replaced a bad ls157 at bc/10 I now have this.

Replace both am6012 chips, and we are getting closer

Found K9 pin 3 stuck that cleared up the diagonal lines

Scaling is wrong for ships, and it appears there are no medium asteroids. Found bad ls175 @ M6

Having problems with High Score table. When going into game mode, it would display BFBFBF
while trying to load the top 3 scores. Found bad ls174 @ N10 but then the table would
now try to load FFFFFF also found bad ls244 @ M9 and bad Earam.

High Score table now works. Onto the sound problems.

Found bad Pokey, and ls164 @ P8 noise generator

All is good.

Holy crap...you almost made one out of spare parts! Incidentally I read somewhere that its good practice to just replace all 4 of those TI081/TI082's, they're prone to failure.

I couldn't sleep late last night and ended up fixing an Asteroids board myself - Symptom was just a dot on the screen randomly moving around. Turning the X gain moved the dot around but not the Y gain.

Replaced all TI081/TI082's in the x-y section and the y-gain now moved the dot around as well, but still the same problem.

Found 7815 voltage regulator in x-y section dead, no +15v. Replaced and all is well.

Gotta jump back to SI boards next...me and the desoldering gun are gonna get a chip removal workout.

Well that's dedication

I have started on the Lunar Lander PCB and wonder what temperature do you guys set the desolder gun to please?

Anyone else find these boards really weak / delicate?

I have to repair a lifted track :(

Well I set my gun at 700F that seems to be the optimal setting for me. Practice and time will help with lifting traces and pads. Some boards will do it no matter what. I've had good luck with Most Atari boards no giving me problems.

Whew! Good job, way to stay with it. So was this for you or for a customer? If a customer, how much did you charge them for this repair?

Not enough :) But MCFreak live just down the street so I was glad I could help. You never know he may have a party soon, and I'll drink all his beer :)

I am having the exact same issue. The dot moves around the screen as I adjust the x and y gains. I will check the VR and cross my fingers!

Wow, really nice job! I am working on a newly acquired, not working, AD myself. Hoping I can get it up and running in a few less steps than you had to deal with!
But this tells me: 1= don't give up. The "problem" could be a laundry list long... Keep at it!

Thanks!

:)
