Me and my dad got a pair of arcade machines; the back story is in another thread. So I decided to fix Asteroids games before my Galaga for my dad's 50th B-day. Here is a list of things that we have done over the last few weeks and mostly after midnight. Just so you know this is my first attempted to fix any game and the only thing that worked when we started was the marquee light......on my Galaga.

Game would not boot and spot-killer LED was on
I unplugged monitor power connector to the monitor ( I think its a G05-801) to not damage monitor
Cheeked power supply

Removed marquee and found it had no bulb
Question 1 - Does any one know what bulb is to suppose to be"
Any way it was late and my dad wanted to see the marquee light up and it was late so he "borrowed" the bulb from my galaga and it just fit and it still did not work
We determined it was a bad starter and we did not have on hand so we got if from my Galaga of course as that was the only think that worked on it.
Got Marquee working.

Checked 5 volts regulated on board and got 2 volts
Removed main PCB
cleaned all socket-ed ICs
Regulated 5 volts was 5

We we not know if the problem was with the main board or the AR1
Plugged in the coin door and put a light bulb in it because it had none
light on owl eye coin door works now
Question 2 - does anyone know what coin box and lid fits the machine, they're gone?
My dad fixed the coin mechs. I don't know what he did but it involved a blow torch and a hammer

Got a 30 amp self regulating power supply and connected it to the test points on the main board without the AR board
Got the start LEDs to blink on the control panel no sound because now AR and no picture
plugged in monitor and got some dots in the upper right hand corner and a rapidly blinking Spot-kill light
Also the lock out coil on the coin door no longer worked again
After a long time I found out that some grounds were not connected with the external power supply like the ground for the coin meter, lockout coil and all the voltage regulators on the main PCB that gets powered by the 36 volts AC from the edge connector
Jumped the grounds on J5 and J20 connectors and got the picture on the lower have of the screen and it was not in English were were able to drop in a coin and play half a game then it popped GFCI on the beaker which also did everything else in the room including the light...not fun at night. so we stopped for the night.

Came back double checked the game and fired it up like it was before but the lock out coil would make a noise so we tapped it down
Adjusted DIP switches, got it in English and one credit per game and slot in door.
After a few minutes the top half of the screen snapped in.
Adjusted width, height and brightness

Changed cardboard bezel, Repo from Arcadeshop
turned off game plugged in AR board game was like before and still no sound not a... do..do..noda.
Went to turn off game and sparks and smock came from P11 on the main PCB....crap
The lockout coil works fine now and no problems sence.
tested with a DMM compared it to an identical chip on the board and found two pins to be shorted one being a 5 volts logic input
Ordered parts online because my favorite electronics place in central CT (cables and connectors) did not have that op amp
I picked up the NTE equivalent parts for the AR both transistors and a cap.
Socket-ed and replaced P11 and parts on the AR and yes I used the insulated sheets on the transistors, the new ones were clear
Game turns on but still has a virtual deflection issue until the monitor warms up and then it fine
Question 3 - Do you think a cap kit will fix this or is a transistor on the deflection board?
Game now has all sounds but the ship fire sound which is my favorite sound in the game, just my luck.
Tried changing caps in the circuity, piggy backed a 555 timer and no change
problem was a bad switch IC at L8 I think, found NTE equivalent
game now has all sounds
Fixed coin counter by turning on all 4 DIP switches that are close the the edge connector
Question 5 Why is there a switch to disable the coin counter and the others don't appear to have any traces to them ether?

Game is now 100%

Final remarks

I was not able th get the game working for my dad's B-day but 2 weeks later didn't hurt

The game now has a dot in the center of the screen
Question 6 How can I fix this and will this be fixed when I fix the deflection issue when its could?
Question 7 - Will Deguassing the monitor with a coil help fix this dot?
Question 8 - Can I Deguass a vector monitor to begin with?

6. Lower the brightness
7. No
8. Yes, but it's a b/w montior so you wouldn't be able to really tell.

Thanks

Thank for the info. This will help me out so much. Also her are a few pic that I was unable to upload before and still can't finish.
