Asteroids or Asteroids deluxe

ad as

i have both, i prefer asteroids deluxe. gameplay, cab, blacklite effect. and the ship is cooler!

I'm more nostalgic about the original, and thought the background on Deluxe was nice, but too distracting for my taste. Then again, I'm one of the lucky few who've got the multigame beta kits so I can play both versions on my Asteroids cab <ducks quickly to avoid the bricks tossed at me>.

With no background though, I do actually enjoy the play on deluxe a lot (possibly more than the original) – especially the "death stars" that break apart and pursue you. And I agree with above – the shields beat hyperspace.

You went the wrong way. I got multi kit for asteroids deluxe.

Heh....but then again, I got my cabinet for $200 working ;-) I suppose if things had turned out differently and I got the Deluxe cab, I'd vote for that...but I'd still have to find a way to dim the background (not remove the bulb altogether, just make it so there was more contrast). I do remember playing the original back in the day (it and Space Invaders were the first two vids I played back in the late 70's). I don't recall ever playing Deluxe in an actual arcade, just at a fellow collectors house.

I would have to say Asteroids Deluxe, I like the cabinet design better, the artwork is beautiful and I like the rotating asteroids better!

Deluxe, the game play is much better. I would always play Deluxe over Asteroids in a arcade BITD. That's why I have one.

I have both & play both... it's one of the rare times a game & it's sequel are both quality games.

I'm trying to think of other pairs of original/sequel games from back then that are both great & respected games. Maybe the 'Pede games?

you BOTH went the wrong way....I got both cabinets working (aside from a high pitch sound from asteroids) for 200. but then again....i have the space ;)

I like both games, hard to chose which. AD cabinet is oddly shaped but i happen to like the art. The background is kick ass and i do like the gameplay. I NEVER played AD in an arcade anywhere. Don't know if it was never available to me or i just passed it up or whatever but I have zero recollection of the game. That's probably why i always choose to play the original Asteroids over the Deluxe. My emotional attachment forces me to do so i guess. AD I just gawk at. Without that attachement though....AD is a better game, but a sequel should be...shouldn't it?

Space Duel is a fun game too, never tried blasteroids. I'd pick one up just to have the family together whether it was fun or not.

While I agree the gameplay on Deluxe is probably better, I've got an Asteroids for the simple fact that I suck at actually playing video games but I can last for a while on Asteroids. It makes me feel like a *player* :)

Cool story time bro: I wanted a really nice Asteroids for my collection and I'd had several that all had the usual cabinet flaws, then one afternoon I got a lead; there was a junk shop selling an Asteroids so I headed over. It turns out the guy had been an operator back in the day and this particular Asteroids died a couple months after it was placed on location, since the game's popularity was waning at that point, he put it in the warehouse and forgot about it.

It is as close to looking like a HUO game for a location machine as I've ever owned, and I've owned a couple of true HUO games. Flawless everywhere, zero burn-in and spotless inside, it had a logic fault and now it lives again. Pew pew pew pew!

Asteroids

I definitely like the shape of the original Asteroids cabinet much better. I also think the art is much better and simpler on the original. The original is much more "classic", and nostalgic. The gameplay of Deluxe is definitely superior. Shields beat hyperspace any day. Both have their place in a large arcade, but I'd rather have the original in my basement.

To the previous question about original and sequels both being legitimate games... my mind immediately goes to Defender / Stargate. I like Stargate better, but Defender is certainly a good and well respected game.

For me-
Pac < Ms Pac
Centipede > Millipede
Defender < Stargate
Asteroids > Asteroids Deluxe

Though these are all great games, of course.

AD all the way.

Random hyperspace death is almost as bad as random dysentery death.

Also:
Picard > Kirk
Millenium Falcon > Enterprise
Empire > Star Wars > Jedi >>>>>>>>> prequels

I think you should include Space Duel in this argument. They should have called the game Super Asteroids. It took the Asteroids concept to another level. Color, cooperative play, variety of objects and shooting UFOs, bonus rounds, stereo sound; etc.

I have Asteriods, Asteroids Deluxe, and two Space Duels.

This reminds me, has anyone here ever attempted the Asteroids Deluxe color mod? There is a way to put a color vector monitor in this game and modify the board to play the game in color.

I preferred asteroids back in the day when quarters were harder to come by. Now that I own a deluxe, I definitely prefer it.

Asteroids BITD. I would love to have one now. AD, not so much, but if a cheap one came my way, who knows?

I love Asteroids.. It was my first arcade.. I like the game play on Asteroids better, But the mirror, black light, and black light art give Deluxe the cool award..

I would have a hard time choosing between the 2....
