I have 2 non-working Asteroids games; one is an early production as it has the owl eye coin door, and the other is later. There are some obvious difference in the connectors, wiring, and monitor boards. Does anyone know if there are 2 different manuals for early and later production?

Earlier Asteroids cabs (and I'd say most of them) have the G05-801 monitors with the 3 separate boards. Later ones have the G05-802, with two boards. Just google schematics for each, as separate docs exist just for the monitors.

There are 6 or 7 different revisions of the game board, though they are all functionally the same, in terms of how they plug into the cab. If you have the latest (7th) revision of the Asteroids schematics, it explains most of the differences. But that's really only an issue if you're doing board-level repair.

Note also that the two monitors technically should use different power bricks (as they use slightly different voltages), so you may notice that the pinouts for where the harnesses plug into the bricks are different. However many ops hacked and modded these, so your cabs may or may not be 100% original.

If you have any other specific questions, post them here.

Well, that explains a lot.

So one game is playing blind, with neck glow. I read on Chad's ArcadeCup website that "Vector boards can often "play blind" with sounds however lack the video output signal due to bad op amps or other DAC issues. This will give an illusion of a dead monitor."

Should I try replacing the bridge rectifier on the power brick, or could there be other power brick issues?

Measure the AC and DC voltages on the XOUT and YOUT test points on the game board. Post the four values here.

That will tell us if the game board is putting out valid XY signals, in which case the monitor should be your focus.

You want to do some basic measurements and determine (or at least narrow down) the issue, before replacing any parts.

There are two different types of connectors that run up to the monitor chassis I think? One has one cable, the earlier models have two I think?
