I have this asteroids deluxe with issues. I am testing it in an asteroids cab. I know the buttons will not all be the same but I should have good video which I don't. The asteriods are not connected. and the space ships and my ship are really distorted. Any ideas?
The game does play completly. If I coin up and start it it will play sounds and the ships and asteroids do move around.

I have checked a bunch of things. I have 2 A/R boards both seem to be working. I have 2 power supplies both seem to work. I only have one monitor and one PCB. My asteroids PCB is not functioning at all it blows fuses. I will go to work on that later.

Thanks
Mark..

Here is a pic if it works

Hmm. If the sound you're getting is the same as the one the buttons make when you push them, I'm pretty sure that means it's passing the RAM test.

I found this web page that has troubleshooting for Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe boards:
http://usbdesigntech.com/asteroids/asteroids_pcb_troubleshooting_notes.htm

This sounds a lot like what you're seeing:

Symptom: Test mode diagonal crosshatch is way off - lines where they don't belong, lines going out of box, the dipswitch representation curves up. The further right the one's and zero's go, (showing the position of each switch), the more stretched up they appear. In game mode, the asteroids are disfigured, they don't make an 'enclosed' asteroid. Any text displayed skews up at about a 45-degree angle, and letters are not formed correctly. I have seen very similar symptom where the problem was in the rate multipliers (7497's), but this time it wasn't. The problem was a 74LS191 in the "Y" position counter, the first one in the chain at location J9.

I'm pretty sure the location info is for Asteroids, not Asteroids Deluxe, but hopefully it can help somebody else here with more experience on these boards give you a hand. Sorry I can't be any more helpful than I have been on this problem...

That was the chip that was bad.

Woohoo... Thanks for your help!!! It's up and running now.

My addiction to save old broken video games goes on.
