I bought a beautiful AD CPO from This Old Game, and new white leaf-spring buttons from Bob Roberts, but the holes in the CPO have the same diameter as the outer diameter of the buttons. I can make this work, but am concerned that the buttons won't look right.

Does Asteroids Deluxe use bigger buttons?

thanks

I just double checked my Asteroids Deluxe... from looking at it from the top it looks like it uses standard sized leaf switch buttons... I just got the machine a few days ago and haven't pulled and cleaned them yet... so I'll do that real quick and double check.

EDIT: Yeah, they're just standard leaf switches. Same size, base, etc as all my other leaf switches.

Im pretty sure the buttons that Bob has are smaller than orginals

I know for certain Bobs buttons fit into my Taito Panel JK but original MIdawy and Atari buttons did not.

Ill pull some tonite of both and compare.

Are you saying that when applied, the overlay's die cut holes are larger than the holes in the control panel itself?

The action button holes in the overlay are cut larger than the holes in the metal panel. (the player button holes are the same size in both).

My machine came with replacement buttons, and i don't recall how big the holes were in the original overaly when I removed it a few months ago.

could you pop the button and see if the overlay hole size matches the hole in the panel?

Yes the original overlay holes match the holes in the panel and it takes standard leaf switch buttons

i just finished 2 of riches cpos and both had larger holes than the steel panel.just center the buttons as best as you can.

The holes on my CPO were slightly larger than the panel holes, but it doesn't really matter, as the surround of the button holder is larger still:

So you should be fine.

This is what I will do. Otherwise, the art is great.

but i do see black panel on the left of the thrust button on your image.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I just ordered one from ThisOldGame before I saw this thread. The other ones on the market aren't die cut at all, but I figured those would be even harder to line up the holes.

yeah I always thought this was strange
the punched hoels are the same as the NOS piece I have and just pulled an old panel
the hole is larger than the panel itself and the button fits to the inside and dosnt really cover it like most other cpos would
Ill try to post a pic.

The holes look to be properly centered, so if one button can be positioned to cover the metal, then all can be positioned that way.

I'll get this installed this afternoon and report back.

(yeah, without any holes, this'd be a real pain)

I know folks are talking about the upright here, but I had the same issue with my cabaret overlay. The holes are actually the correct size, but the cutouts don't line up perfectly and the trim on the button isn't enough to completely cover the difference.

This is kinda interesting. Im gonna take a look at mine this afternoon. I swear when i changed my buttons the original cpo didnt have extra large holes.

working with mine today, what a nightmare!

it's going to just end up being a compromise on the placement, if I center it on the shields, then the rest of the holes don't line up, and since the holes are the same size as the buttons, i'll end up with the black showing through from the CP underneath. :(

I'm thinking I would prefer the CPO without the holes cut, i think it would make it easier to apply, not harder. It's hard enough to get it positioned with the bends of the panel, so adding in the issues with the button cutouts it magnifies the problem.

If I ever go through and redo mine, I'm going to want a custom CPO...

I hate that layout... I miss shields too often. I'd love to move shield over to the thumb on my right hand instead of having it out in the middle of no where. ... ... dare to dream.

The only suggestion I came up with - but didn't use on mine - would be to affix some buttons to the panel before the overlay is added and then use the buttons to position the overlay. Would propably only need to place 2 buttons.

this way you can be sure to get closest to the best possible positioning, and not have the overlay shift like mine did and have even bigger portions of the metal show thru.

without the holes precut would be easy if you had a light source that'd help show how to position.

I have an AS overlay without holes, if you want that one - send me a PM. The texture is not nearly as nice as Rich's, the colors are a bit different, too. I got it about 1.5 years ago, but is in good shape.
