My Asteroids Deluxe monitor died. It has neck glow but thats it the game plays blind. The guy working on it said he thinks the Flyback is the problem. Can a monitor have neck glow if the flyback is bad?

This is what he said in his email:

"On your v2000, its still broken and i'm 99% sure that you have a bade flyback. I changed out every part except the flyback in the HV cage and still can not get the 95 volts needed for the secondary winding on the flyback. It floats around 15-30 volts and at around 25v a very dime picture appears then fades. The deflection pbc also has a problem and that is you can not adjust the contrast, so the picture is to bright and its making retrace lines on the screen"

Yes. Did he check the high voltage with a high voltage probe?

If you can get a sheet of paper to static cling to the screen then you still have high voltage. Check to see if the spot killer LED is lit on the deflection board.

Thread update

I added to the thread what the guy working on the monitor told me just checking to see if anyone has and ideas.

So its too dim and fades but then He says its too bright? whaaaa? Im not a expert but you don't adjust contrast on the deflection PCB

My first idea is... Get your monitor back, the guy obviously doesn't know what the fuck he is doing with it.

^^^ this guy knows His shit, Heed His advice. Your tech may have no experience with Vector Monitors

Instead of "reflow the solder" you should always remove the old solder make sure that the pin and PCB are shiny before applying more solder. Sometimes the pin will look corroded. Use a small brass brush or razor blade to clean the pin before making a good connection with new solder. If you bypass clean pin and pad surfaces before you solder you risk just making another cold solder joint that will haunt you again.

I can get a new old stock 15" monitor for $300 the guy says the chassise is the same as the 19" what are your thoughts price seems high but i'm not a vector guy.

$300 doesn't seem outrageous for a NOS vector monitor, but I have nothing to compare to. Depending on how old it is, you might need to recap it first thing. The chassis isn't compatible, because it's sized to fit the smaller 15" tube, but they use the same deflection boards & HV cages.

If you do end up going that route, I'd be very interested in buying the chassis, tube, and yoke. I don't see a lot of pricing info, but I know new 15" tubes are available for $109 shipped. I'm thinking a straight split means we both get parts we want for $150. Let me know if you're interested.
