I have an Asteroids Deluxe that has a humm on it that's just loud enough to be incredibly annoying. The humm seems to be coming from the speaker.

The noise actually seems to be effected by whatever is happening on screen at the time. I made a YouTube video of the attract screen to demonstrate this, you can hear the sound getting louder on this every time "PRESS START" flashes on:

I got a new Big Blue from Bob Roberts and installed it, but there was no real change. Any suggestions as to what I might do about this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

There have been quite a few threads on asteroids humm from the speaker.. Do a few searches here and on google.. It's usually the harness connection to pcb, power supply needing to be rebuilt, or just shielding issues with some of the wires. It's not the monitor.

99% of the time replacing the big blue will do nothing.. It's just a good idea if your keeping the game for awhile.

Yeah pretty much what he said...I think there's a good handful of reasons it can happen. Capping the board may help, and I know I had two cases of hum I fixed:

Asteroids (non-deluxe) - something in the wiring...hummed bad until I manipulated the harness and it went away. Could be a dirty plug or edge connector. Before that I replaced big blue, capped the monitor, etc.

Deluxe - one transistor on the AR board was toast and added a high-pitched humm/hiss. I could tell it was bad...the little nylon screws that hold the transistor to the heat sink was baked brown since the part was getting super hot. Replaced that and all good now.

Mine had the same hummm, I repinned the edge connector and it went away, Im guessing stress on ground -ie resistance from a dirty burnt pin, I know some folks on here have run jumpers from test points on the board, iirc that seemed to reduce strees on the connector too, but I have not done that...you could put new caps ont he board too, they may be out of spec

i bought an asteroids upright and it came with a box,it had an ar power supply in the box, real nice condition but it was not the right kind for asteroids, months later i bought a asteroids dlx.

anyways,i knew the ar i had spare with the asteroids was the same as the one in the dlx,the one in the cab worked so why change it?i advertised it for sale after trying it in the dlx and have to say the buzz that happened with the old one went away,i sold it though and told the buyer he had a nice quiet ar power board coming.

had a buzzing asteroids prob when first got it,i changed the edge connector and it cleaned up a lot,but theres still a little bit of buzz left.
