Hey guys, I was wondering if someone could help me out with a sound issue. First off, This is my first game and I know nothing about it, So, With that being said. I have great sound for awhile but then it goes out, Not all the sounds but there are different sounds for the different sized Asteroids, I lose the deep tones but keep the high pitches, I think I've checked all the connectors but Im really not sure whats what back there. Thanks for any and all help in advance.

What u want to do is check the harmonic balancer using a spectograph. Then make sure all ur coin splitters are in correct firing order, if not resolder it.

So are you saying that all sounds will start acting up, or just certain ones?

I would check the Tant Caps in the sound circuit. Starting with C24

No, Not all sounds, Just the deep tones, I never lose all sounds just the same sounds. If I restart the machine, Sometimes they will comeback, Sometimes they wont?

Trying to narrow it down to which sounds.

There's

The Thump Thump Thump
Saucer flying
Xtra Life
Saucer Fire
Ship Fire
Explode
Ship Thrust

I'm assuming the ones you are talking about are the Thump Thump, and Explode

all I get when I lose the sounds is a pinging noise for everything, Doesnt matter if I hit a big asteroid or a small one, it's the same light ping sound. I feel dumb explaining it like that but Im not sure how else to put it? Maybe I would be better off taking a video of it to show someone????

No, Not all the sounds, Just the sounds of the asteroids being shot. Instead of having the deep base sounds when you hit a big asteroid you just get the pinging sound as if you hit a small one. When the ships come in they sound fine, When you hit the accelerate button it still sounds good, And the "Star" Ships that come in still have the heartbeat sound, I'm probably not explaining this very well but bear with me. lol.

The easiest thing to check first is C21 right next to the Chip R6. Pull one leg of that and see if the tones sound right. The volume of the explosions will be much louder.

Other than that it could be F6, P7. You'll need to hook a scope up to the outputs to see if you are loosing your amplitude.

Since this is an Asteroids Deluxe I always suspect the Pokey chip (and its socket). This can effect both graphics and sounds.

Oh, Now you show up :) How was your trip. I would suspect the pokey as well, but it sounds like he's only having problems with the explode. Keeps confusing me when he states "Everything"

The explode sounds samples the noise, then runs through some resistors, and and gates. Then right to the output. With that Tant Cap hanging on the end. Those things always give me grief in the sound area.

Sorry Talon, I figured it was confusing. What was going on was I was completely losing the deep big asteroid explosion, When a ship comes in, It sounds just fine, When the heartbeat comes in with the triangle ships it sounds just fine. When I shoot, Whatever I hit gives me the ping sound like I am hitting small asteroids all the time. Hope this clears things up a little atleast. I do however have an update. I got tired of this happening so I basically unplugged everything that was plugged in, Cleaned it, Then reattached them one at a time. I also checked my voltage outputs from the power supply. Everything seemed to be fine, Atleast as far as I know, So after putting it back together I have not had this problem again? MAybe something loose? MAybe something dirty or maybe just something 30 years old, Who knows at this point. Should this happen again I would really like to hire someone in my area to troubleshoot this thing. Thanks for all the efforts.
