Asteroids Deluxe Dead, well, kind of dead *Update 5-31-10*

I picked up an Asteroids Deluxe, non-working, last week. Got it home and discovered it was simply a broken wire on the coin door interlock. Got it working great. Cleaned it up, added the bulbs it needed, and set it next to my Centipede. My Nephew goes to play it and tells me all he did was press player 1 start and the screen displayed some lines then went dead. I check it out and the coin counter was clicking, both player buttons flashing, and nothing on screen.

Here's what I did:

Monitor is a G05-802/805
had neck glow
spot killer led was on

test switch does nothing

cleaned contacts on edge connector
checked for broken traces, shorts, burns, etc..
checked all fuses - one on the monitor board was blown (F101)- replaced
checked +5v @ AR - was +5.5v, lowered to +5v
checked +5 @ pcb - +4.83v
re-seated all socked chips

now no more coin counter clicking and no neck glow
reflowed a few suspect solder joints on pcb
re-seated socket chips again

now coin counter clicking sometimes
no neck glow, spot killer led stil lit

I'm pretty sure that's everything. I got to play this game once when I got it working. I got the high score! It's awesome! Any ideas?

I am sure you figured this out...but order a power supply rebuild kit from Bob (might as well replace the Big Blue at the same time) and then retest.

Yeah, gonna order it this weekend. But what about re-seating the chips 2 times, both with different results? PCB problem too?

Well I got the Atari AR repair kit from Bob Roberts & it's still not working. I'm now getting a steady +5.23v @ the AR board, and +5v at the PCB. No neck glow on monitor, and the spot killer LED is lit. No sound at all. Both player buttons solid lit. All fuses good. Any suggestions?

Board issue for sure. 6.8 is a lot and could have done some damage.

I was afraid of that.

I just checked the voltage at the coin lights and get nothing. The continuity is good all the way to the power supply. Does that maybe mean something else is bad? ANy other test points I should be checking?
Should I disconnect the monitor while testing, just to protect it?

I would just check the test loops on the AR board and voltage at the main pcb. The monitor gets it power directly from the tranformer assembly, measure it anyway at where the monitor plugs in. Sounds like the board is locked up.

Well I reseated all socketed chips and no results. I'm checking now for broken traces on the pcb just for the heck of it, and I noticed some of the chips pins looks oxidized or something.
Here's some pics from my microsocope.

Does that look right? The solder joint looks good, i guess.

OK, so I pulled all socketed chips and cleaned all pins nice & shiny. Now, when I turn it on, the coin counter clicks, player 1 light solid, player 2 light blinking, no neck glow, spot killer on.
Man, this is harder than troubleshooting the worst server issues I ever had to deal with.

Forget to mention, when I boot with test switch on I get nothing but led on pcb & monitor, and player start buttons.
