Asteroids Deluxe Color Mod -- what do you guys think?

Well, it's not really a mod -- I just took the color gel off an "updated" Asteroids machine, and replaced the light blue one of the Deluxe.

The colors look awesome. In fact, eveyone comments on it when they see the game lit up in the arcade.

The effect is really enhanced because you can't see the gel or the color zones, because the monitor is reflected.

Looks great. I have been meaning to do red gels on mine for a while. Just to change it up. I was gonna do the same to Asteroids, as that came with no color gel and should have.

Where can you get this "gel"?

I've looked at my local craft store and did not find it.

I think a red gel would look awesome. When I first did this, I put the colored gel overtop of the original light blue one (which was glued to the cardboard bezel), trying to take the easy way out. But, the colors were very subdued.

When I actually swapped the new gel in, everything looked great. Even much brighter than the picture shows.

The gel I am using is the one that you sometimes see on original Asteroids machines, that kind of looks like a Star Castle gel.

Ok I will ask, what is an "updated Asteroids machine" , never heard of such a beast ? If it looks like a Star Castle Gel it probably is one that somebody just threw on there.

Sorry, but what is an 'updated' Asteroids machine?

So the colors are from a gel on the b/w monitor?

Sorry but I'm a bit slow today and confused....

I believe the story goes that when Asteroids popularity started to wane, a color gel was produced, which looked alot like the Star Castle gel. It wasn't exact, though, as it had more color variations.

You simply placed the gel over the Asteroids monitor, and voila, you had instant color.

There was also one made for Space Invaders, for the same reason, although it looked alot different.

Can you post some photos of the gel, I honestly have never heard this story or seen the gel, can anyone else verify this ?

so for a moment you have yellow asteroids and then they turn to blue asteroids as the move to different parts of the monitor?

yucky,i dont have asteroids deluxe but,i have asteroids,i think its not a good idea.whats that word now that describes what you did?

"ghetto"

Here is a link to an old rgvac posting asking about what I think is this overlay. Unfortunately, the link to the actual picture of the overlay is dead. Read down to about the sixth comment, and he discusses the Asteroids overlay.

I will see what I can do about the pictures, but it's already mounted to the underside of the bezel, which has been stapled back in place.

I do have a picture of an extra Space Invaders multicolored overlay though ......

Yeah - it was like a sturdy, colored "cap" that went directly on top of the monitor glass.

My non-working Taito Space Invaders cocktail had one.
