Hi all!! I'm new here and need some help please, I'm trying to get the coin mechanism to work. I see 2 wires hanging from a harness next to the interlock switch in the coin door, one wire is white and the other is black, do they have to be plug somewhere ? You can see them here in the picture.

Looks like the wires that would've went to the test switch. If you short them together and fire the game up you should see/hear it go into test mode...

I could send pictures if you narrow down the problem a little. It looks like the wiring inside the loom is there. PM me if you dont get a solution.

I can go to test mode just by putting in test. I'm just trying to get the arcade to work using coins also, If I put a coin in now it changes the count but that's about it.

In an Asteroids UR the test mode toggle switch is located by the coin door interlock switch...My switch is missing and I have two similar looking wires just dangling there in about the same spot. Connecting the two dandling wires together causes my machine to enter test mode and therefore I presume they belong to the missing switch.

Perhaps Asteroids Deluxe has a different setup...I'm not sure what you mean by "just putting in test".

Regardless, if those wires are related to test mode, they wouldn't be affecting the operation of your game as they aren't connected anyway...

I checked mine and I have the exact same two wires "loose". How are you coining up if it does not work? I know this sounds stupid but is your board set on free play? When you turn it on, are both the start buttons flashing? If it is, check your 8 position toggle switch on the center of the board. "Normally" you should have 1-8 in this order on off on on on on on on. If all 8 are set to on, it will be in free play and the coins will not work. Other than that, you will have to start checking the wires. I have the wiring diagram and it goes through one square connector just inside the door straight to the edge connector on the main board. Check the edge of the board and the connector. If you say the coin counter is working, The board is recognizing a coin being inserted.

Those 2 wires are for a test switch, with use of a different type of coin door. They do just hang and do nothing, since your test switch is actually on the coin door. And the bracket does have a place (empty) for a test switch, but again this is for a different type of coin door. It's just something Atari did, a universal wiring harness. As for your coin door not working, it will not work if your in free play.

Thanks asteroidsNut !! I'm learning something everyday. So I guess the problem it's not the door. How do I get it out of free play? I already changed the dip switch in the board and still can't get it out of free play.

You set them incorrectly or the DIP block is bad. It's very likely that you reversed on/off or the switches aren't completely closed. It takes a surprising amount of force to move the sliding-style DIPs. Double check them, and you should be fine.

Regarding the loose wires, Atari had different coin doors for different countries. For US coin doors, the test switch was mounted to the inside. For overseas doors, the test switch was mounted on a panel screwed in to the cabinet, the same one that holds the volume pot. Those wires are to connect the test switch for those foreign coin doors. I believe this was also the case for owl eye doors. There's another set of wires in the coin door connector for the US doors.

Can the problem be a bad POKEY ? I had to order one because the asteroids doesn't break apart when you shoot them. I see in the Schematics that the POKEY also connects with the Dip switch.
