My game has the bezel that slants back at the top. I never knew that there was an anti-glare bezel on some ADs until I saw and played Phet's in person. The bezel on his game slants back at the bottom, which I believe is the one that reduces glare.

So my question is, did Atari make a certain amount of ADs with the bezel like mine, then what, ops complained about bad glare and Atari realized they had to change the design in the middle of the production run? Did Atari themselves figure it out mid-run and then change the bezel? Does anyone have any info on this? How many were made with each type of bezel? Does anyone know the final production #'s for AD?

I find things like this really interesting, and usually someone here has answers.

You can see in this pic how the bezel on mine slants back at the top. Oh, that's YodaInMn playing....

... and you need two side pieces of wood for supports for it. You'll need to have someone trace the wood supports needed from their cab that has the kit installed. I bought an anti-glare bezel but never installed it and sold it. I just moved my cabinet to another location and the glare was not a problem for me as long as you don't have a light directly behind the cab it seems to be a lot better. But you need to hear from folks who installed or have one for their side of the story.

I didn't realize it was a "kit" released later....directly from Atari? How long after production was completed did these kits appear? I'm not interested in changing mine by installing a kit, but I'm curious just the same. Anyone else have any info?

ad anti glare

My understanding is that mid production they switched it because of complaints. Then they offered the kits to the ops who wanted them.

I prefer the anti glare as it also seems to enhance the sounds which end up behind the bezel it makes an echo chamber kind of like tempest...

The bezel is actually slightly larger than the regular bezel.. I put one on mine and its awesome.. Takes the glare away...

Mine didn't have one but I have played on both, depending on light conditions it may be useful, mine was in a nice dark environment and I had no glare issues without the kit, played one in a well lit arcade in a shopping mall bitd and I remember the glare being a problem, enough so I didn't really become a fan of the game until I owned my own.

Bringing this back to life...

I have the antiglare and find it certainly has glare, depending on the lighting condition. I wonder if it really is any better than standard equip.

By glare I mean I can see my reflection in the screen. Is that what we are talking about?

It also seems like the antiglare kit makes it hard to play without bending over (or sitting on a stool).

I've never had any glare with my game, the lights are dim in my gameroom. So I don't know how big of a problem it really can be...with or without the kit. I just find these kind of things interesting and I like to hear people's opinions.

I think you should put in a low-wattage marquee light in your game John. I have to slightly hunch over so the light from the marquee isn't too blinding.
With regard to the kit I never really played on an AD with the anti-glare kit but I'm sure it would help a bunch!

The kit also changes the sounds indirectly. With the speaker behind the bezel it has more base. I think it sounds better.

So was this something you picked up as an NOS part? Did you have to make your own blocks to fit the new bezel?

No block replacement.. Its a drop in replacement.. Its larger due to the different angle.. No my kit was not NOS.. It was a used original, but it is in nice shape..

I like how The anti glare kit on mine makes the bass sound awesome on the game. (The speaker once the anti glare kit is installed is in behind the bezel).

BITD the florescent lights on the ceilings of the arcades would reflect into the standard bezels and made the game harder to see and kinda killed the whole cool 3D effect/mirror thing. I remember having to look through glare when I played BITD. Both bezels look cool on the cab though.

I have an NOS anti glare, and I have not put it on my cab. I never noticed a glare problem and I am not sure I like the idea of trapping the sound behind plexi.. I think the glare issue is more of a problem for kids. I think more AD I have seen are non anti glare. I would guess 60/40.

Why anyone would want a cocktail or cabaret AD is beyond me.. The blacklight it part of what makes the cab great. Add the great side art and its a no brainer..

The kit makes the sound, AWESOME on the game. The whole game rumbles when you use the thrusters on the ship. Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmm

Glare is really bad without the antiglare kit if you have games facing each other. Antiglare is a huge improvement n that case and I'm glad I found one. Now I just need to fix my AD again. :)
