Does anyone know if all versions of Asteroids Deluxe have auto-fire (where holding down the button automatically fires shots)? I'm curious about this, because the original, harder version (starts out with six asteroids on wave 1) does not have auto-fire in MAME, and I want to know if that is an emulation issue or if the original version indeed does not have it. I was under the impression that it was present in all versions for some reason. Thanks.

FWIW both AD's I've owned had auto-fire... but both were also running on the newer rom i do believe.

Just fired mine up to check. Autofire. I held the fire button down and got 4 Rapid shots in a row, followed by a slight pause, then 4 rapid shots in row, slight pause, 4 rapid shots, etc.

I have the version that starts with 6 asteroids and I have auto-fire.
Interesting... Are you sure you don't just have the newer version, but the DIP is set to hard? The easiest way to tell what version you have is to enter test mode. If there are only 8 values for DIP settings:
0000
0000
Then you have the earlier version. If there are 9:
0000
00000
Then you have the later version.

I'm wondering if all the early versions do not have autofire.

I had no idea. I just checked and it is the later version.

Just as I suspected. Thanks for the input everyone!

In case anyone didn't know, in the original version's test mode, the third value of the second row can either be a 0, 1, 2, or 3 depending on the DIP settings, and it correlates with minimum plays required. If it is 0 or 2, then it is set to a 1 play minimum. If it is 1 or 3, then it is set to a 2 play minimum. The reason it can be 0, 1, 2, or 3 and not just 0 or 1 is because there are two switches set to it, though one of the switches is not used.

In the updated version, that previously unused switch is set to control difficulty, and its status is shown in the fourth value of the second row, pushing the original fourth value (which correlates with the score required for extra ships) over to a new fifth value. If the value is a 0, then the game is set to the easier mode (four asteroids in starting wave, killer satellites begin on first wave but start out moving much slower). If the value is 1, then the game is set to the original version difficulty (six asteroids in starting wave, killer satellites begin on second wave but start out moving much faster). The third value (minimum plays) now can only display a 0 or 1.

Sure, you can hold the fire button down and get repeated bursts of four shots, but nobody is going to play it that way. You can fire much faster by tapping the button.
