Does anyone make a stencil for the control panel? I'm thinking about restoring mine and would prefer paint over the full wrap CPO.

I think there was another CP sticker that was just the top and not a full wrap.

I did some research on this last night and think I can pull it together for the most part. I've downloaded Inkscape to edit the vector graphic file and have the .AI file already. I've never done this but I'm a longtime IT person and pretty good DIY'er so I think this is not going to be too tough.

I'm looking for someone who can print stencils and maybe offer a little advice along the way. At this point I think I just need to separate the artwork into Red/White/Blue layers and do a little cleanup. I'm willing to pay for materials and shipping for anyone who can print this stencil for me.

Anyone interested?

Thanks!

Actually..yeah I might. Even better if the stencils are on a material that can be used more than once. Should be easy since the design is simple.

Isn't Dave probably doing these eventually?

For the few popular screened on metal panels - Asteroids, Missile Command, BZ, etc - If someone is willing to spend $50ish on a screened overlay, it seems reasonable that someone would pay up to double that instead for it screened on a new piece of metal. Can it be done for that and the seller still make a profit? I dunno.

You don't need to do it on new metal..just strip and re-use the original CP.

But that would involve everyone sending their panels in, in a coordinated effort. If a guy wanted to make a run of it and just let them sell, he'd have to bend new panels, paint, rescreen, and pack for shipping.

Like That80sGuy said, I'd look to reuse my CP. I'm all for keeping this low cost ... and I don't plan to go in to business selling them, I just wanna solve my problem and make this available to everyone else. It would be great to see some freshly painted CPs on these games!

My only concern about reusable stencils is thickness. That might make for edges that aren't sharp?? I've already started thinking about painting techniques that would keep the edges sharp and would prob get a couple of these printed so I could experiment before actually doing mine. The black hammered finish base coat makes the edges a little more tricky I think. Won't know until I try!!

No - just like sideart, you'd get the stencils and do the work yourself. I'd even post the artwork online somewhere so you could download and print yourself if you had the right stencil cutter/printer.

Maybe a point to clarify: I think these are simple enough that screening is not required. I'm planning old fashioned stencil/spray can type work here.

I'm saying that I think someone making panels, screening, and selling them is a good idea.

If you only need to repaint the white, blue, and red squares, you might as well use frisket/stencil material with adhesive, and cut the stencils on the piece. If you want to redo the whole thing, a stencil might generate ok results, but details as small as the text really need to be screened on.

Rich at TOG floated the idea a couple of years ago. I want to say he was looking at taking a core cp, arranging the blasting, repaint, then rescreen. He was looking to line up several so he could do them all in a batch. I expressed interest, still have both CPs I wanted done, but as far as i know it never happened. I'm sure other projects bumped it to the back burner. There may also have been some issues in arranging some part of the process that Rich did not directly have a hand on. Say, the sand blasting part. Not sure, we would have to ask Rich.

It's probably hard to justify setting up the screens to do several at a time, but I imagine the blasting and repainting of the black is fairly labor intensive.

I gut stencils, but the letter on there is going to be pretty small for an average cutter. It would need to be silkscreened.

yeah tried to test cut this as well the letters are just too small.

was going to offer to screen them (send in the panel for screening)
But Dave/RamC was working on new repros so I went and moved on to other projects.
but wouldnt be the first time Dave "claimed" to have a project underway
that never surfaced.
No ofense but just saying :D

Oh come now Riki... if "now shipping" means 8-11 months until you get your stuff, just imagine what "project underway" means.
