I stripped the entire front faces of the panel down to bare metal and primed it. Sprayed it with semi-gloss. It's still kinda wet so it's hard to tell but it kinda looks overly shiny. What's the proper look for this thing? I bought a can of flat also....so I could do a respray if it doesn't look quite right.

EDIT: I'm trying to do a nice job but not shooting for showroom condition. The side art is scratched on one side and I'm not going to try to fix that.....

Asteroids

The origoinal CP had a texture to it. Semigloss seems to match the best but without the texture. It will look too Shiny. The full wrap CPO from Mike's looks pretty good by the way.

I used the Rustoleum appliance epoxy paint, cleaned off the old overlay, the original silkscreened overlay was under it but was in bad shape, cleaned sanded and wire brushed the panel till the surface was nice, sprayed 2 coats of the appliance epoxy paint, picked up a nice over repro overlay and new buttons from Bob, and whamo-facelift :)
I would say its not quite a "semi gloss" look and not flat black but looks great to me.

Before and after pics.

Well, I thought about trying to texture it but I ended up just leaving it the semi-gloss paint over flat primer. I think it came out pretty ok all things considered. It's not as perfect as some of the pics but looks way better than it did. I'll try to get around to posting some before and after pics if I can find a before one. It was pretty bad.

I did something similar to XXX static. The black areas of my original CPO were dinged and scratched. I masked off the colored areas and began to sand out the scratches and applied a small bit of bondo to fill in the grooves. Since there was unevenness in the texture, I used Rust-O-Leum's hammered finish, because the CP was textured. It was a great match. Then I used Appliance Epoxy to match the color closer, because the hammered finish isn't a true black. After doing all of this, I removed the tape covering the silkscreen areas. Then to match the new and old paint better, I used a gloss clear sealer from Rustoleum and held it at a distance and applied several coats. The original black in the silk screened section and the new appliance epoxy matched very well. Here are a few pictures.

Another angle. You'll notice how well the two blacks match up after the clear coat was applied.

I had to do what you are dong to my Asterods Cabaret, sicne no one sells an overlay for it. I matched the black and then sprayed the entire CP with automotive clear to preserve for the next 30 years!

Luckily the original painted CP was mostly intact and only minor touchup was needed. I'll post pics when the resto is done.

mhanlen1 That's really nice work!
Best looking option imo.
I wish mine was silkscreened, is there anyone that does it?

Very nice work mhanlen! I've done several of these over the years and finally settled on the full wrap overlay for badly worn control panels.

A repaint can be done and if you decide to go this route, I've found the Ford Engine Blue from O'Reilly Automotive to be a perfect match.

I think there was talk about thisoldgame doing it a few years ago, but I think it fell through. Yeah if it's not to scratched up, this is the nicest looking way.

I would have probably went that route, if the artwork was damaged. It's still slightly uneven where I repaired it... but it was slightly dented and gouged. It looks way better than it did though.

Ok, here's my before and after shots. Obviously it's not a full-wrap overlay. I got this one from WhizzesWorkShop for $18 + shipping. It's good quality, a great deal and shipped quickly.

It's hard to tell from the pics but the "before" version was peeling up badly and had heavy scratches through it on the left side. Obviously it needs new buttons as well.

Not working on a full restoration here. But it's presentable now.

A good quality for the price you paid. Was there an overlay on the original CP? Or was the paint peeling directly off the metal.

There was another overlay that was peeling off. And it was a B to get off of there. I ended up using multiple applications of heavy duty paint stripper. Which took the paint of in about a minute. But that sucker just kept leaving parts behind no matter how much I worked at it.

So, are these full control panel overlay wraps screened on textured vinyl? They appear to be. If so, that would be a good route to go.

Lucky for me, I don't need to go this route seeing mine is near perfect. Just needs a mild cleaning and repaint the bolts.

My CP is also pretty close to perfect. There are some areas that need touch up. Anyone know what colors match the white, blue, red, black? Do the Rustoleum colors match?
