First off, newbie here, obviously. I have looked through the site and didn't find a section of vendors, or repair shops per se. If this is the wrong section, or asking for repair is not cool, I understand.

I recently acquired an asteroids cocktail with monitor problems I'm guessing. The game plays great for the first thirty minutes, then the rocks start to become really dim. My ship, and the UFO ships stay bright, it's only the rocks.

Is there a place in the Los Angeles area that you folks recommend that can do these repairs for me if I take the machine to them? I really don't want to just let some random person from the internet try and repair my machine and screw me over.

thanks in advance.

Sorry I can't help you with monitor repair people in your area, but if its not the monitor you can ship Mike AKA road.runner can fix your board for board issues. I've worked with him before and you can trust him and he has a very good rep here.

By the way it sounds, since just the rocks get dim, I would say its a board issue. I say this because the monitor is still showing images, just the rocks are dim, thus the part of the board i.e. logic chip that makes the rocks is having issues. Or something shorted still possibly a chip and the rocks get dim because of it.

When you flip the test switch inside the coin door, does the grid pattern show up evenly on the entire screen of the monitor?

That might be the solder on the header pins on the monitor chassis that have become cold and need to be reflowed. This is the place where the connector from the game PCB connects to the monitor chassis. The monitor chassis is attached to the monitor frame.

You should remove the old solder and flow new solder. You will need a de-soldering tool and a soldering iron and some solder. You will need to discharge the monitor before working on it.

Very simple repair.

If you want someone to look at it you could call P&L monitor and bring it in. Would be about $40-$50 though. Where are you located?

As a XY monitor tech myself you need to figure out if your problem is the monitor or the logic board. The best way is to find someone that can test each of them one at a time in a working game. Asteroids and other vector games can be difficult to diagnose between these components unless the person you are asking can see the problem or can recognize the failure. I would say I could help but live in Kansas City.
