And it happened like 6 months ago! But, since my living and working situation has not been KLOV-friendly for most of this year, I waited til now to post about it. I had my wife pick this up from Gorfchampion back in the Summer. The cab is solid, though does have some moisture swelling on the edges. I will probably eventually peel the old vinyl, sand the particle board flat, brush some wood hardener on the edges, reseal the surfaces and apply new vinyl. I haven't decided if it's going to be woodgrain or custom. In any case, the original screened CP is in excellent shape and the 13" monitor has a great picture. I have always wanted to pick up one of these, ever since I sold my full sized Asteroids when I picked up a Deluxe 8 years ago. There is something about the simplicity of Asteroids that made me miss having one in the gameroom. I also really love the sounds of the original. Well, anyway, I finally own one. I can't wait to move this into the New Galaxy Blue, hopefully sometime in Late January/ Early February. Pics:

Interesting specimen. I wonder how many of these were made.

Glad to see you could keep one of John's machines local. Too bad he had to dismantle his setup - what a neat little space he had.

Good luck on the renovations, hopefully you have a place to call home soon.

That thing is Ugly..........................So of course I love it! :D

If you don't woodgrain it, what would you do? Mini full size sideart?

I always wondered also.. there isnt really much info on these.

I have an import with the silver coin door and I have seen a few others (TNT had one when he sold off his collection).

Prior to this week I only knew of a handful, this one just popped up and there is one for sale in the for sale section.

They only made Asteroids and Missile command with that style cab, you do see Missile command around from time to time but asteroids seems pretty scarce.

I like the Atari cabarets, in fact my only pick up of the year was a BattleZone cabaret. Congrats on the grab.

I agree and love the simplicity of asteroids. Bright white against super black screen plus classic sounds. I am sure you can't wait to have a good space to work on it and we can't wait to see the restore pics. Here is to a great 2017.

If it was mine I wouldnt do anything other then vinyl or repair whatever is needed and try and keep it as original as possible.

It doesnt look too bad to me... plus most people into minis want the woodgrain so they look right in a row.

Thats a pretty rare mini from what I know, maybe even the rarest Atari mini.

People pay up for Dig Dug (they made 500 or so) but I think Dig Dug is more common then Asteroids... you see it more often anyways. If you were going to try and get a complete set of Atari minis Asteroids would probably be the toughest one to find.

i had one of those for a bit and there are several others floating around the Seattle area; i doubt they are all that rare but it's pretty cool to see them anyway.

i hate fake wood grain and i'd love to see how a full side art package like that would look on the cab.

Maybe your old one is one of the ones that is floating around now..

TNT amusements had one or two when he sold off his collection. He had the biggest cabaret collection anywhere and he said he had only seen one other one in his years of collecting those.

I collect the things and I have seen exactly 6 including these two that just came up.

i know where mine is, we have had one on location at Another Castle in Edmonds (one of the owners collects cabarets and i don't recall if it's currently on the floor or not,) and i have at least one other friend who owned one (not sure if he still has it.) the owner who collects cabarets also has a Missile Command in the same shape cab.

i'm familiar with Todd's former collection. i sold him my Space Demon cabaret at a time when photographs of them had not even made the rounds on the internet and he had never seen one. now several have been found along with cocktails and even a dedicated upright. Asteroids might be a relatively rare title for Atari cabarets but i have my doubts all that rare. there are plenty sitting around in warehouses and the backs of garages waiting to be discovered and put back into playing shape.

Interesting.. Missile command is the same cabinet but you do see that one around here and there. Asteroids you really dont see often and there are no numbers on how many they made unlike all the other Atari minis.

There was some thought that they were just made for overseas and any that are over here were imported since quite a few are silver coin door imports.

I would be curious how many are out there in actual collections. Even with the few you know about that is still under 10 I know of and there are only 10 or so listed on Vaps...

Based on several years of collecting minis, Asteroids is the second most uncommon golden age Atari mini, in my experience. Dig Dug is the least common. Tetris has the lowest production of any Atari Cabaret.

It definitely wasn't Ireland-only production.

Missile Command had 1,500 Cabaret units, based on Asteroids being the first capical-C Cabaret that Atari made & the numbers I've encountered, I'd estimate production around 750-1,000.

Woodgrain is the only way to go on these Atari Cabarets. I'd be super into custom floating art for Asteroids/Missile Command, like what Atari made for Battlezone/Tempest/Centipede/Asteroids Deluxe.

I've got one in my collection. Love it. But I honestly like the feel of the uprights a little better. The cabaret is a little small and the control panel is a little too uncomfortable IMO. But I still love mine.
