Just wanted to post an update and get some feedback here, we've made some good progress. Unfortunately the original panel we have is pretty faded, so the color swatches don't look anything like the panel. I've posted some pictures, the new overlays will be based on the four colors you see on the swatches. These color codes were taken from the original films, so I'm 99% sure this is correct.

Basically just a heads-up and update, if anybody has any feedback or input please post. I imagine many panels are faded like this, just didn't want anybody to be surprised when their new overlay looks different from their current one.

The last picture is the die proof for cutting the holes, it seems to be dead on with the panel I have.

Thanks,
Anthony

Looks good Anthony and one thing to keep in mind for everyone on colors partically in this case. Most of the Atari art screened to the smooth finish polycarb BITD YELLOWED
on these later pieces
for example the 720 Ariel overlay silver turned bronze, APB white seat art turned yellow.
so in this case the blues on the cpo might look more teal and the yellow more gold.
using the films PMS numbers is the only way you can accuratly tell what it should be or still look like today.

A good comparison would be the SideArt which would have used both the same color and extact same inks.

That's yuck, but no worse than what 720 tends to do.

That makes me wonder.. why do Toobin overlays typically look so good - white whites, not yellowed, etc..? Was this not the same process?

Heheh that old faded panel is mine... I guess I needed a new CPO more than I thought, lol.
Thanks for chiming in Rich and good job Anthony!

Yes those colors are the correct ones Anthony, my NOS cpo has those same bright colors. All original Assault cpos have faded over the past 23 years since they were made.

Art from late 80's Atari Games titles faded in different intensities due to the exact type of material that they were printed on most likely. 720 fared pretty badly (making people believe there was actually a "gold" version of the art lol), while Toobin' remained pretty much unscathed.

The Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters cpo really degraded (color-wise) over the years. So much so that the color morphing that occurred makes it look like an entirely different cpo than what it was once originally. Here's a comparison member fizgig posted recently:

Just put some retr0bright on that and it will clean it up. :D

I am really curious if Retr0bright will work on CPOs.

There is a little strip above the monitor on Assault, which on mine has yellowed but not quite as badly as the CPO... presumably because it was more shaded from UV light over the years by the shape of the cabinet. I was wondering if those strips are going to be reproed? If not, I sure do hope Retr0bright can help them.

ah this is the other one I was thinking thanks for posting Nash
yeah its the material that yellows so in the case of toobin proably a different material.
Ive noticed it more on the later Atari stuff on the smooth finish verses say the rougher texture. Not sure which toobin is. not to mention Atari may have had more than 1 supplier of materials so it couldve just been a particular brand or batch.

It might. It would be cool to see just as a science experiment, but I wouldn't do it as a substitute to getting a repro.

Toobin' has a smooth finish just like Assault, Robot Monsters, Galaga '88, etc. but yes a different brand or batch was used for Toobin' most likely. Xybots cpos also held up pretty well like Toobin'. Galaga '88, Pac-Mania & Dragon Spirit cpos had fading issues as well, but not as intensely as Robot Monsters or 720.

No, me either. Hey maybe Xyla should try it and see how it turns out. ;)

I have a NOS piece of this strip, I got it from Stephen at videogameparts.com. I think he has a few left, shoot him an email: Videogameparts.

Well... I managed to secure a snazzy NOS upper monitor overlay courtesy of Videogameparts.com

Just got it in the mail today. Thanks Mylstar!

It appears to be the exact same material and colors as what the CPO would be. I'm hoping Francis can verify this as he has seen both in person.
I was kinda surprised it was an overlay, I was expecting a piece of graphics on a stick of wood, heh. If so, I can send this upper overlay to Anthony if needed to make sure the colors and texture is absolutely correct... though it was pointed out the colors on the films should be what it calls for.

thanks francis for giving us a heads up on this piece of artwork. it looks better than the faded piece of art on my assault.

also, big props to stephen for super fast shipping!
