Thinking about building an assault cab, I wanted to make sure it's possible before I start buying the pcb and parts for it. Does anyone know where I could get me hands on some controls for it? If I can't get new or refurbished controls for it, does anyone know of a compatible alternative? Thanks

Might want to try messaging Mylstar to see if he has stick sets. But they may seem a bit expensive (his shit will be pretty much like new though if he has some).

Might want to try takeman to see if he still has a repro panel left. Don't know.

quarterarcade.com has the repro control panel overlays.

Nobody makes sideart (yet, hopefully some day).
Nobody makes the marquee.
Nobody makes the art for above the speaker panel.
Speaker panel is I think unique to this cabinet (and nobody makes that).
PCB cage is probably also unique to this game.

Honest opinion? Wait for one to come up for sale. They are usually pretty cheap. If you try to build one you are in for a huge waste of money.

Sad but true - you are much better off waiting for one to turn up for a reasonable price, rather than build your own. There are several sitting on EBay at $700 or so, but they've been sitting forever - you want to try to find one in the $300-$400 range. I paid (a couple of years ago now) $350 and drove a few hours to get mine. It needed the sticks rebuilt and otherwise is great.

The only way I'd say to try to build your own would be if you wanted to try to build a cocktail unit - supposedly the Assault plus ROMS do include a cocktail mode, as well as two player mode.

I don't know what you'd use for sticks on such a beast (the standard ones would be way to big, I think), but if you could solve that problem, you'd be able to build something cool an unique.

Absent originals, I played one with Xenophobe type sticks before and it wasn't bad at all.

I regularly see these go in the $175-250 range off eBay. Hell I paid $175 at a live auction for mine and the collecting market was probably hotter back then.

That is actually a decent suggestion if he is inclined to make some custom art for it. I bet those tulip top fire sticks I'm always seeing on Assault uprights would work on a CT. That or a pair of crane machine sticks.

Assault is apparently one of those games that you can spend x on, but end up having 2x in after restoring it, due to the controllers typically being hosed and needing rebuilt.

The only problem with incorrect sticks is that Assault had 4-way trigger sticks, not 8-way. I don't know if anyone actually makes those.

You will go broke trying to piece one together, don't do it. Assault parts have always been really pricey, probably because they almost never got converted.

Assault is one of those games that collectors have a thing for but that most folks don't even remember. Pretty sure I got mine for under $200 and it had brand new sticks in it.

They come up cheap from time to time. If you wait long enough one will appear.

I really don't think Assault is a game you can double your money on restoring. Although you could probably triple your money parting one.

Yep. Sad but true. If I remember correctly, I paid $140 for mine, but it didn't have the correct sticks on it. It does now, thanks to kspiff and mylstar. If you're determined to build one, I think the cocktail idea is great.
