Arpicade Help Thread

Yeah this is just the vanilla version, public release. Roms from earlier versions will work if you copy them over to the new one.

Ah ok thanks, I tried doing that but it fails because of insufficient space. Looks like the 3.7 image is sized smaller than the memory card, guess I need to find a tool of some kind to first expand the image to use the entire memory card and then copy the roms over. Time to hit google and figure out how to do this.

The image is sized for an 8 gig card as it's the minimum usable size. To use a bigger card you will need to use the partitioning program of your choice to move the 2nd partition to the end of the image and resize the first partition to fill the newly created space in the middle of the card. Before resizing the first partiton copy it's contents to your computer as resizing will destroy the contentts, then copy it back when resized and you should have a working image.

Yeah still trying that with no success so far. In Windows disk management all partition options like shrink, expand, etc are all greyed out, it doesn't seem to support this image. I'm trying via command line now with the Diskpart tool but that doesn't work either. It will say either there is not enough free space, or the volume cant be extended because the file system doesn't support it, etc.

I'll keep trying, maybe I haven't found the right parameters yet for Diskpart. Worse case I'll buy a partition manager app and see if that can do it, but for now I'll look more into Diskpart.

EDIT: Ok looks like both Windows Disk Manager and Diskpart can't move partitions. I installed a freebie software called Mini Tool Partition Wizard Free 10.1 and it's grinding away, seems like this will work. Thanks for the help!

Quick question (sorry if it's already been answered in one of the threads)... will this SD card image run on a standard RPi3 w/o the ArPiCade board? Or will something fail because of a real HDMI monitor/resolution, trying to use the keyboard as an input device, etc? I'm tempted to buy one, but I'd really like to try it out firsthand to see how specific games run. I've got several RPi3s around here that I could try it on.

Thanks,
DogP

It will run. May need to set res in config.txt. But it will boot.

Dee2er, What runs well in the 181 build? Cave?

Honestly I don't really use 181, rendering has changed somewhere between 172 and 181 and the results don't match the rest of the system really. Performance is similar to 172, maybe a little better in some titles but I didn't look too much further into it. Mainly included because it was still the current version of MAME (at the time) and I don't think anyone had released a current version in an image before.

Cave stuff is generally best in Advmame or FBA, depending on the title.

It will depend on your monitor, it may just work. You may need to adjust the resolution in /boot/config.txt if your HDMI monitor doesn't like the signal (mine are fine with it), if you do need to change to high res also uncomment the change to highres options in /boot/launchers/servMenu.sh and adjust the system to highres in the Attract-Mode service menu (left/right on the keyboard or cab service button in the menu to find the service menu). Do not launch a game before changing the resolution like this or the laucher script could change the res to one unsuited to your monitor.

Pure keyboard use is a little buggy/not well setup compared to JAMMA use but should give you an idea.

If your cab has no service button you will need to plug in a USB keyboard before powering up. Once the system has booted press either 'service'(cabside) or (on keyboard) 'left' or 'right' until you're at the service menu. Use the joystick to select low res vertical and the system will reconfigure it'self and reboot setup vertical.

display_rotate=2 is just to flip the image should your monitor mounting be upside down. Don't use any other values here, 1 or 3 would work but would make getting the setup consistant accross the various emulators very difficult.

Thanks for the help on expanding the sd image, got that all working. My horizontal cab is back in action, but I still can't get the vertical one to actually display in vertical. So I press left a couple times and found the "Low res vertical" option. When I select it the system reboots but it still comes back as horizontal. I tried it a few times and it always comes back as horizontal. Is there a particular button you have to select it with? I tried pressing enter or joystick button one and the result is the same, still horizontal. I guess it's not saving the setting on reboot just not sure why.

...and one more question since I'm full of questions today. With 3.7 it does that "building gamelist" every time the machine is powered up on both my horizontal and vertical jamma cabs. Is there any way to disable this? It takes quite a while on mine, maybe 4 minutes or so.

I think you have to change the layout from robospin to verticools. I can verify tomorrow for you. You should notice though when you select a game it's vertical.

Cool let me know what happens on yours. On mine I can set the layout to verticools, attractman_vert or whatever and the setting is never accepted, it will always show the default layout regardless. Switching layouts this way used to work fine on 3.6, but om 3.7 it doesn't work anymore. Curious to see if it works for you. The games themselves do indeed run in vertical mode though, just verified that, so it's just the layout change that doesn't seem to take hold.

Cool... thanks for the details. I'll give it a try!

What menu do you choose "low res vertical"?

Are you changing / using the Arcade or the All Games list? Try checking the other list (cab service button or left/right on keyboard), maybe you were changing the one you're not using as without console games they would be the same list.

can be disabled in /boot/run.sh (this is the file that controls what happens after the pi boots).

Cool, i'll try that tonight.

In the arcade menu, I think it was tab->arcade->layout or something like that, then you choose what front end you want. On 3.6 there were a handful of vertical layouts and selecting any of those this way worked. On 3.7 you can do all the same layout selection, but it just never takes effect.

I believe you have to reboot to save changes
The splash screen doesn't seem to rotate or does the game list now loading message. But after you make the verticools change, hit escape, then exit attract mode, escape again for a prompt and then type in Sudo reboot. Saves your changes.

Oh yeah after you make the change and hit back a couple of times to get back to the games list , hit the > arrow key on the keyboard. And that is the screen you are changing, should show verticools if that is what you selected then, do the esc/esc to a prompt and then sudo reboot.

Ok i tried both methods, I attached pictures to show what I'm doing.

1) First pic shows what I currently see, the default horizontal image.
2) Second pic shows where I choose the layout, I tried with both Verticools and AttractmanVert
3) Third pic shows one method I tried to reboot, pressing left->left then selecting the reboot and force save changes option.
4) Fourth pic shows the other method I tried to reboot, hitting esc, exiting attract mode, hitting esc again, getting to a command prompt them typing sudo reboot.

Neither of the above methods works for me on 3.7, it still shows the default horizontal layout. I'm sure I've skipped a step someplace, not sure what just yet. Maybe 3.7 now needs changes to a config file someplace? The behavior has clearly changed from 3.6 so perhaps now text file mods are necessary?

EDIT: In case it matters, I'm using the 3.7 image that High Score Saves emailed out. Figured I'd mention that in case that 3.7 is slightly different than the 3.7 y'all are using.
